Noisy Gear Change?

Postby Sid » Thu Mar 06, 2008 11:12 am

Hi,

Not sure this a transmission problem but, when I start my XK8 first thing there is a noise when the auto box changes gear.
I cant actually work out whether the noise comes from the engine or gear box but it sounds like a starter motor over running!
Its only recently done this and again only when running cold. Stops after a few minutes.

Anybody seen/heard this before or point me in the right direction? It was serviced a couple of weeks ago so all fluids/oil are fine.

Sid.

:?: You didn't say whether the noise had begun before or after the service, just "recently". Is it possible that the noise has only appeared after the service and thus may have been caused by someone who worked on the car? The gearbox oil level is critical to correct operation of the gearbox but it is not necessarily checked at every service so it could be incorrect (low or high) and causing a noise despite the car having had a service. Mike.

You were right.
The gearbox oil was not checked/changed.
I'm waiting for some free time so I can do the gearbox oil and filter change myself. At least I can trust the work then!
It was not just the gearbox oil which was low.
I started getting messages abut low coolant and oil pressure when first starting. Checked and both were lower than they should have been.

All ok now.

Hi Sid, I wouldn't wait too long before topping up the box and investigating why it had lost fluid. XK8 gearboxes are expensive! Mike.
