Hello everbody. I have just recently purchased a 96 XK8 in metallic burgandy (not sure of the correct colour designation). This is my 2nd jag having previously owned a 94 X300 4ltr Sovereign .
I am completely over the moon with the XK8 and can think of nothing I would change her for except perhaps a K.
However, I have a slight problem with the cigar lighter which will not work. I have tested out the wiring to the fuse, the fuse itself and checked that power is leaving the fuse towards the lighter yet no power is arriving at the lighter.
My next move is to remove the centre consol to get at the back of the lighter to fix/remove it.
I can see no easy way of removing the centre consol and I do not want to rive at it in case I break/damage something. Any advice on how to remove the centre consol would be very helpful!, by the way my local dealer Reg Vardy were very unhelpful.
Hopefully
Richard
xk8 cigar lighter removal

Richard,
Welcome to the forum. I suspect your burgundy car colour is Carnival red.
I assume you have the ignigtion switch on position 1 or 2 whilst checking the lighter? My 99 XK8 won't ackle with it in the 'off' position or key out.
We're impressed that you can afford a Jaguar and CIGARS....

Hi Richard,
Welcome to the Forum
Although, its been quite a bit of time since I had the centre console out, I did do it quite a few times when I first bought my XK8 Pacific Blue Coupe getting on to nearly 3 years now and it is quite a straightforward procedure. I felt just like you, not wanting to do any damage. By the way, I was fitting a Nokia telephone in the armrest and picked up the power feed from the cigar lighter, hence my need to get 'underneath' the console.
From memory:
1) At the end of the console tunnel (behind the armrest) you'll find a upholstered 'pad' to finish off the console. Just gently prise that off - it should come of quite easy from its push fasteners. You'll find two screws there which holds the rear of the console to the tunnel. Remove those screws.
2) You need to remove the gearlever surround. The wood cover is also a pushfit and the fasteners are roughly located at 10, 2, 4 and 8 o'clock positions of the surround. I tend to go to the 4 o'clock spot and gently prise the cover upwards, being careful not to damage the panel. A plastic screwdriver shaped tool is ideal. I bought myself a claw-tipped fastener removal tool with an S-shaped tip which works well and is useful for a lot of the plastic fasteners used on the car (boot lining, etc.).
Lifting up the wood panel will usually also losen and unclip the metal gearliever surround.
You will have to move the gearlever from Park to Reverse and unscrew the gearlever knob to be able to slide the wood and metal surrounds off the gearlever shaft.
Once you have done that, you will see the 2 bolts which hold the console to the tunnel at the facia-end. I am not sure if there are a further 2 screws to remove, but if there are it would be very obvious.
3)You can now pull the console backwards out from its seating in the facia.
Be careful when you move the console as there are some wire connections and it does not give you too much room for movement, but it is all very obvious and sounds much more difficult when its written down than actually doing it.
NB: I would also suggest you don't leave your key in the ignition even in the 0 position as you have some circuits live (even if the key is removed) and make sure no wire connections shorten out while you are moving around.
Just be generally careful as the XK has a quite sensitive electronics system.
Re-assembly of the console is just a reverse of the above. Once you have done it the first time, you'll find it a lot easier the next time, as with all these things, its just a bit of confidence.
Good luck, Richard, and let us know how you got on.
Karl
