Dashboard Rattle

Postby bcz » Tue May 16, 2006 9:52 pm

I have an 02 2002 XK8 and have a rattle in the vicinity of the air vent grill on the drivers side (RHS). The rattle is noticeable when I go over an uneven surface. It is more noticeable in warm weather than cold.

Can anyone please advise how the air vent grill is removed from the dashboard so that I can investigate the cause of the rattle.

Bear in mind that the whole dashboard was pre-assembled before locating it within the car. Therefore, removing bits of it may not be as simple as you might think or desire. If your rattle is behind the outer air vent, it may be better to start by removing the lower scuttle trim panel and investigating as far as you can from there. If the problem is behind the driver's side centre vent, try removing: the centre trim panel; the glove box liner (to get at the electrical connector); then the vent itself plus its lead can be prised out carefully using a thin lever. Rattles are notoriously difficult to track accurately, especially those that only happen on the move. Don't be surprised if the culprit is actually under-bonnet or even further away. Of course, turning up the radio might be an easier option! Mike.

Dashboard rattle

Hi bcz, I have the same problem as you. My car is the same age as yours and the rattle occurs erratically at about 50mph. I have found that it disappears if you press the bottom left hand corner of the instrument panel that contains the speedo and rev counter. Alternatively pressing the top left hand corner of the trim panel below the instrument panel has the same effect. I am wondering whether I can wedge something invisibly under the edge of the panel to hold it in a slightly different position. It doesn't seem bad enough to try to dismantle everything but is annoying nonetheless. Good hunting

I understand that Jaguar can supply dealers with a squeaks and rattles kit which includes various tapes as well as a fluid (Krytox) which literally lubricates trim components. The quieter they make these cars, the worse these irritating little problems become! Mike.

Just browsing around some other areas of the site (as you do being a newbie) and I noticed there is a Jaguar technical bulletin on this subject. That suggests bracing bars as a possible source. Might be worth having a read.

Hi Steve,

I have wedged half a wooden cocktail stick between the trim and by trial and error location I have managed to cure the rattle.

Thanks for the suggestion.....bcz

Does anobody know how to get rid of a squeek in the drivers seat. The seat is for the 2002 XK8 model and has a heater.

I have found the root cause of my dashboard rattle and it is very easy to fix.

Just gently prise out the radio speaker grilles located on top of the dashboard. The speaker is attached to the grille and will lift out easily. You will then notice a star type screw. Both mine were very loose. After tightening the rattle completely disappeared.
