hi,
just been out today in the xjs and I noticed the fuel pump was very noisy, making a loud whirring noise, but I am not sure if the pump is the problem,or maybe the suction filter is blocked, also the engine became quite jerky, so my first question is...
1) if the pump was starved of fuel would it make it noisy?
2) how easy is it to clean the suction strainer?
thanks

Allan,
Its preety much a dodle to remove the swirl tank and clean it out and also to check and clean the nylon filter.
Rust and or dirt is definately the main cause of killing fuel pumps.
The main thing you need to do is clamp off the hoses before you start, i would put some thick card or thin wood either side of the pipe to protect the pipe from any sharp edges on your clamp, or monkey wrench if your like me.
I would also suggest, removing the filler cap as i think the system is pressurised.
You might also want to remove any carpet and trim, that may splash, or squirt out unwantedly.
You might want to consider putting an inline clear fuel filter between the swirl tank and the input to the fuel pump like i have done.
Stops crap getting to the pump in the first place, and you can see any fouling with it being see thru and replace when necessary for smoother running.
And if your worried about the pump i can reccomend a non original fuel pump that i fitted courtesy of seller on ebay.
my car runs so much better after having these fitted.
I actually had to adjust my cars AAV down, as it looks like it had been adjusted to compensate for the old knackered pump.

thanks for the reply mrb39,
the funny thing is that if I leave it off for a while (say 10 mins ) the pump starts up again very quiet, then after about 5 or 10 miles it starts to become more audible and quite annoying!!

As suggested check the filter in the sump tank. It is on the end of the pick up pipe.
Also worth changing the main fuel filter if you dont know when it was last changed.
Is the pump clamped in its holder properly? If it touches the body it will vibrate.
If these remedys fail it may be a worn pump. It would be interesting to know the suppliers name on Ebay?
Regards Kels.

The pick up pipe in the "swirl tank" has a VERY fine nylon mesh gauze filter on it. The fuel tank corrodes internally, as does the swirl tank, these flakes of corrosion become eroded and eventually will form a suspension of gunge. As the fuel pump sucks this suspension is drawn to and held against the filter thus putting the pump under load.
If you do nothing eventually there will be enough gunge to prevent sufficient fuel reaching the engine to allow it to run. You will then mysteriously break down at the side of the road. As you sit there scratching your head the suspended particles fall away from the filter and after ten minutes - voila - it starts!
Then a little while later you break down again...........
Proceedure to clean is as described previously and I would do it sooner rather than later. If you look up under the rear floor there should be a bung which when removed allows access to a drain plug in the bottom of the tank - if you can remove it that is......in any event you can remove the swirl tank with very little fuel spillage but do remove all carpet/trim from the area otherwise it will smell for ages.
Be prepared for a shock when you see the amount of crud that comes out
Good Luck

hi,
well after cleaning the sump tank and filter, fitting a new fuel pump (bosch) and filter , no difference ,the problem re-occurs at about 20/25 miles.
I took it back to my trusted jaguar garage, they took a look into the main fuel tank this time (through the sender aperture) and they could see a film of contaminants/water/ sludge on top,not sure what it was.the tank was washed out and now all seems well,I have driven it about 80 miles without any issues!! so fingers crossed!!
they did ask if I used supermarket petrol, which I do not,I always use 97ron BP,TOTAL,SHELL,ESSO etc but maybe a previous owner did,or maybe the fuel just went "off" not really sure.
