Key Fobs no longer operate any functions

1998 3.2 130K miles little use in last 3 months.
Despite replacement batteries. key fobs no longer operate any functions on the car. There is a beep from the engine bay when a button is pressed but nothing else. Unfortunately, somewhere along the line the valet button has been pressed and, as the black-headed key will not unlock the boot, my stuff is locked in. Any ideas? This has only happened very recently ie this week sometime.
I am assuming the key-operated lock in the boot has rusted or something; the external button hasn't worked for a couple of years now either.
I've seen other topics involving SLCMs but, as its in the boot....

Dave...........when you replaced the batteries in the key fob did you put the new ones in almost immediately or with say a minte or so.....have a look under the recding of key fobs in the security section .....there is a certain way for each model to reprogramme the fobs ........

Method 1 (this works on my 2001 MY car...I've used it more than once)
Open the boot with the key.
Turn on the ignition (do not engage the starter)
Wait for the self test lamps to go out.
press the "VALET" button 5 times within 5 seconds
then press any button on the remote.
It should then work (don't forget to shut the boot lid first)
You may need to reprogramme any other fobs you may have as well,in the same session.

Method 2 Some members say this works but it does not on my car.
Hold headlamp flasher switch in the ON position and turn ignition switch to position I (first position)
Flash headlamps four times and the system will enter alarm programming mode which is confirmed by the security light on the gear shift flashing.
Press either the lock or unlock button on the keyfob and the alarm will chirp a confirmation when the button is pressed.
The alarm must complete a full cycle of programming of transmitters five times so when there is only on transmitter then this needs to be programmed five times.

Hi Dsquared,

FYI the black key should unlock the boot (and the glovebox). It's the GREEN headed key that's the Valet key and it won't unlock anything other than the door. Try squirting lots of WD 40 into the boot lock to free it up. I give mine a wiggle with the key every so often in case the electric release fails due to the well-known broken wiring problem around the hinge (it's happened to me twice so far).

Hello Joe,

It might be the fob which is at fault - they often gum up inside.

I suggest that he dismantles the fob and cleans the contacts under the push buttons.

Make sure he has cleaning materials etc to hand as if the fob is dismantled for more than 7 minutes or so (I think), the programming will be lost.

If still nothing, take it to a auto factors, most now have a test device which will tell if the fob is sending a signal or not.

if not, replace the fob, if it is,... method 2 is the one to program a V8 but you don't need to program the one fob five times, just do as many as you have, UP to five.

Also, ensure the batteries are fitted the right way around!

I'm having a similar problem to Dsquared. I have put up a couple of seperate posts in regarding the issue but thought I'd try this thread given the nature of the original post.

I have one old fob and one brand new which I bought from Dave Roche at Jaguar Parts in Aberdeen. £53 including delivery, Jaguar main dealer wanted £85 plus VAT. Hope this helps danr.

Both fobs are transmitting ok, have checked at car parts shop, batteries were weak in the oldest fob, so replaced and both fobs have a good strong signal.

When I put the car into programming mode as per method 2 described earlier in this thread, I get the confirmation beep from the system that it is in program mode, but when I press either of the key fobs I get no confirmation beep. Program mode times out after about 20 seconds.

I have disconnected the battery and left off for some time in the hope something my reset, but no joy!

Is there a fuse or a relay in the receiver circuit anywhere? I don't have any circuit diagrams to work from so am struggling on the Rx circuitry. Where is the receiver antenna mounted in the car? I know control module is in the boot...but that's all I know.

This fault is really bugging me, any advise help on sorting it would be greatly appreciated.

Car is a 2002 3.2SE. Circuit info is in the lit you kindly provided the link for.....I thought I was driving a car not a space shuttle!! Last time I did vehicle electrics it was a shed load simpler than this! Thanks for the help, I will set about trying to work out whats going on.

Hi to all. I have just had my XJ8 key fobs repaired by someone I found on e-bay. The cost was £12.20. The carbon contacts are replaced with switches. He does have a website which saves going through e-bay, and you can still pay by paypal.

The key fobs now work as if new and give a reassuring click when the buttons are pressed.
