Electric Steering Column - Reach Adjustment Not Working

Hi,

Picked up my lovely new XJ8 Sport this afternoon. One little issue is that while the electric steering column will adjust for rake (up and down) it will not adjust for reach.

When you pull the adjustment knob towards you or push it away to make the steering wheel move in or out it just makes a clicking sound like something is not engaging.

Anyone else experienced this? What was wrong? Are there any realistic DIY options for fixing it? Specialist only?

there is a plastic gear strip within the column that unfortunately wears or breaks, it can be quite easy to replace, but can cost from £30 to £70 to buy

quite common i'm afraid , dont be duped into replacing the whole motor though , you only need the gear strip

Thanks Brake Buster, reassuring to know it should be an easy fix (and not mega-bucks). I've certainly budgeted to get a few jobs done...

Any idea where I can get this part from? Lots of places online seem to list the whole motor but not just this part.

Also, once I've got hold of the part is it fairly DIY?
