).Did a bit of research and found out there's a cable in there,so the whole door card has to come off to access the cable.
A bit daunting I thought,not looking foward to this but it's got to be done.
Luckily I have a good set of trim removers.
Found a replacement cable on eBay for(wait for it) £8.50 inc p&p(every £'s a prisoner
good people) could not believe it,came two days before M.O.T.Here's how I did it:
Red arrows first:
First remove the screw in the door handle cup behind a little cap, and remove the cup by pulling on the door handle and working the cup out.
Then remove the screw(which is quite long) under the arm rest.
Useing a trim pry bar to pop out the two fasteners holding the veneer trim in the door,they are positioned behind the point of the arrows(don't force anything,
if it seems stuck use two pry bars,top and bottom) and then SLIDE it to the RIGHT,there are two prongs that are behind the handle which is why you slide. Don't try to pull towards you or you could damage the prongs or even worse the veneer.

Use the pry bar again on the fir tree fasteners of which there are 7 again behind the point of the arrows.
To remove the door card itself, first PULL the bottom part out to where you can see all the side and bottom fasteners,and the card itself is about 2" from the door, then lift the card up.
You will notice a channel just below the window where the card slots back in on reinstall.
Take a photo of the inside of the door card now so you can see how the cables are routed when you put it back on.
Disconnect the speaker wire, and the yellow connector for the door/window switches as well as the wire for the door light.
Then you can see the door handle and cable and the whole lot should slide out,once out remove cable and fit new one to the handle(reminded me of m/cycle cables
),refit back on door and you can feel behind the door latch where the other end goes but make sure you put the little rubber grommet over the guide (helps protect the cable during operation)and then attach the nipple to the lever.

The red arrow is where the nipple goes.
The green arrow points to a little spring clip that pivots up to let the cable out and is very easy to come off(don't ask me how I know this
,only it's a bugger to retrieve,you have been warned) After that put the door card and veneer back on in reverse order.
So,after a bit of research it wasn't to bad,took about an hour and a half but I didn't rush and I cleaned behind the door card as well,why,I don't know,but at least I know it's clean behind there.
Hope this helps if the cable breaks on your door,which I think is quite common on the drivers door as our cars get older.
