Electrochromic rear view mirror

Oh dear another complicated part gone to the scrapyard in the sky.......a thing you cant maintain, sealed beyond owners repairing them.....but..you can buy one oh yes.....about £180.00.....or you can send it back to the company who made it in the USA.......they used to replace it free of charge......now they have passed it on to another company, who i believe will replace it for a nominal fee ,..about £50.....or so.....So when it happens you get no warning, just a small amount of horrible black ink like liquid drops down onto the gear lever or the woodwork surround (very toxic stuff) my wife had some tissues handy and caught it immediately.......What you are left with is finding a replacement...i checked up on past 308 postings and one from Dec 5th 2008 by the famous Brake Buster (who else) with details of how to do the job as usual spot on my thanks to him.....I did manage to find a replacement mirror at Eurojag nr Darlington i have used them before and they are top notch......so removing the old mirror you have to remember it will have been on there since the car was new so be careful not to be superman and ease the mirror off instead of yanking it off...(or a new screen is the result).....if you have 8 wires and a white multi plug your car is the wiper sensitive type....if its a yellow plug its not that's the questions you would be asked on finding a used replacement.......one thing to remember is when you take off the mirror from the screen you ease it down off the metal clip attached to the screen putting it on you slide it up on the clip....connect the white or yellow multi plug depending on your type......the wiper sensor models will have a round black section which you attach to the screen this is the sensor......dont force anything or the wrath of a broken screen will fall upon you.....when you have all this in place slide the black locking piece into the underside of the unit until it clicks into place on the prongs.......then pray it doesnt leak in a weeks time.......

Resurrecting a very old topic - because the mirror in my x308 has begun to fail. The car has enjoyed a cherished life since 2000 and I guess that's why the mirror has lasted so long before starting to leak.

The question is whether anyone has undertaken a repair in recent times (to replace the liquid filled mirror with a gel filled type)? I've seen one comment that mirror cells are available and with a bit of cutting the plastic mirror casing and some easy soldering of connections a fix can be made - but even this DIY job will cost upwards of £100.
The other line of attack is to ask whether there is a suitable alternative that would be a fairly straightforward swap. Was a similar part used in other Jaguars or Ford models of the slightly later period? I want to find a substitute that was manufactured after the technology switched away from the (leaky) fluid.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
Eric

As youthis is in the Interior forum guess your referring to your interior rear view mirrors fluid?
Still searching for a replacement door wing electro-chromatic for my Sov X308 too.
Not yet prepared to sell a kidney for one.

So my want is in the forum: https://jec.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=102&t=10850
In that thread I've also listed the "usual suspects" for second hand together with contact details

If that helps any? For the exteriors, I'm told it's the same mirror element as also used on the X350
But dunno if it's the same interior.

I've retro-fitted electro-chromatic to the Passat. The internal comes as standard on the SEL but guess the controller, etc would be too different. And yes, a replacement glass still costs a kidney, from VW. They're style is not fluid AFAICT ('06MY) but has a darker ring of mirror round the outside about ¼" wide. When activated those don't brown out but grey out. At least on both cars they're power folding...

Good luck :!:
