dashboard rattle

Hi , this is my first ( of many probably ! ) , request for advice ...I've just joined ..i have a 98 3.2 Sport in Carnival Red ..Im slowly finding my around the car , and have found the advice from the posts here very helpful ..I've noticed a " knocking" noise coming from behind the vents/clock are of the dashboard ...its sounds as though its a fan catching on something ...if i press on top of the dashboard immediately above this are , it stops , but starts again ?? ...i've taken the clock/vent section out to have a look , but couldn't see anything obvious behind there ...can anyobe shed some light on this please ? ..its driving me crazy ! ..thanks

I had a similar noise on my XF, turned out to be a leaf caught in the fan, should be easy enough to tell if it is the fan by switching climate off and see if noise disappears?

Hi Andy , thanks for that advice ...i'll try that ...Its intermittent ...didnt do it for a few days , then yesterday - all of the time ...very annoying ! ..cheers

really , if no obvious rattle or squeak can be located, spray a little polish into the area , this should lubricate the parts that are rubbing together

and it makes your car smell nice

Hi BB - thanks for that ... i hadn't thought of that ...the noise i have though is more of a knocking as opposed to a rattle ..its as though something is hitting the underside of the dash immediately above the clock/vents ...as i've said - i've removed these but couldn't see anything that could be hitting this area . I've had a look at some of the other forums and as possible cause seems to be the de mister vents moving ...when pressing these during this knocking noise - it doesn't stop it ??? ...any further suggestions would be very gratefully received as this is driving me crazy now !

Couple of things to consider: Does it happen at rest or only when moving? If latter suggests it is something loose knocking on the underside of the dash? Can you locate the point at which is hitting the dash, if so might make it easier to track the cause. Ultimately I suspect you will have to systematically remove bits until you can get at whole of area behind the dash and trim, then hopefully it will be obvious? Could try the mr sheen trick though??

Ha Ha , thanks for the tip BB ..i knew i'd left he somewhere ! ...Andy - it happens both when stood still and moving ??? ..think you're right about having to strip out the different parts until i find it ....its definitely the area above the clock / vents ...just have to take more parts out to see i think ...tried the de mist vents ...touching , pushing these as per the advice on other forums didn't make a difference - so can discount this ...i'll keep you updated ..cheers

on a serious note

my rev counter makes a noise , its a feint noise , but its a noise, and gets quicker /louder when i rev the car, and yes, i have swapped out the rev counters and it makes no difference ,

just something i have to live with ... well , not really , i have now sold the XJ8
