"full" respray?

Postby blackflash » Wed Mar 10, 2010 9:04 pm

My '98 XJR is generally in good nick and gets many comments to that effect, but every year I spend a few hundered quid on getting this and that sorted on the bodywork - A pillar rust last time, now rubbing on the lower front wings from the mud flaps and keen to sort out all sorts of scrapes on the rear bumper...

Has anyone taken the plunge, or thought of doing so, and getting the whole car resprayed? Any idea how much this should cost? Should I stop keeping on top of the bits and pieces and save up all the "few hundreds" to do this?

What does a proper full respray consist of? Clearly we are not talking about stripping the car back to bare metal here, but I assume lots of trim has to be removed to do a proper job.

Any comments or feedback on experiences gratefully received.

Nigel

I'm in the process of getting my restored XJS ready for painting ,

the thing is, how much do you want to spend ?

as a ' full ' re-spay consists of removing all trim , and possibly even the glass.... its lots of labour and this is what costs the money , so the more you can remove yourself will save hundreds in the body shop.

my two brothers actually spray cars for a living, and my ' family rate ' paint job on the XJS will cost about £2k , and i will get a £5k job for that,

but budget about two thousand for a quick job, and three or four for a proper paint job to be proud of

BB is not far away there, but it does come with the quality job you require.
He will no doubt be "in on" the job as its with family and can keep putting his view on what goes on............ but i have in the past had a major repaint job done when i had my big shunt in 2006..........that was in Blackpool......i had the car shipped down to Worksop to let Alan Proctor do the work........the best move i made..........he did an absolutley great paint job.....i have had other work done there to since then even though i live in Leeds..........whats a few miles to have the satisfaction of a top job done...........i see you live in the midlands ....why not give Alan a call and have a chat re the job and the cost..........(he wont do a bodge job though) a very good job for a reasonable price.

www.jagrestoration.com.............his phone number is 01909 501 660

He will also give you any information you may need re the paint processes that are now in force...........top bloke withihn the forum............Joe :D

Thanks Joe. I was already thinking of giving Alan a call nearer the time (and when I have the cash!) and this helps to convince me that would be a very sensible thing to do. In fact I might get in touch soon just so I know what the options are and costs.

Many thanks,

Nigel

Thanks very much Joe, glad to hear you are still pleased with the job, and Nigel I suggest you give me a call sooner rather than later as I have a very full order book for some months to come.
