Cat replacement

Postby Kenxj8 » Sun Apr 18, 2021 12:31 pm

Hi, I see there is much discussion about the cost of cat replacement.
I needed to replace the cats on my 2001 X308 and after research found that non OEM cats were available much cheaper than the Jaguar parts.
However I also found that there is a legal requirement that replacement cats for cars after a certain year must be certified for compliance to EU/UK regs. Having found suppliers which claim compliance yet still much cheaper than the Jag units I purchased 2 which came with a certificate showing the required compliance.
Changed the cats which solved the problems and thought no more about it.
Whilst clearing the shed last year, I found the old cats that I had removed. A bit of web searching found that old cats are still valuable. I found a company that purchased old cats and got £180 for the pair.
I have read that one of the current car crimes is the stealing of cats which can be very simple on many cars particularly if one is not worried about any damage.
If anyone takes a car to a dealer to have cats replaced, ask the price for exchange and see what they say?

regards

Hi Ken,
I will have to do this job on my car soon as both cats have gone rusty.
I've repaired them for now but will need new ones at some point.
Do you have a link to the company you purchased the new cats from please.
Were they difficult to change?
Take care and stay safe.

Hi, I don't have the supplier to hand but I think I have the Compliance certificates somewhere....
It was a company in Manchester. I'll see what I can find.
As I remember it was not too bad to change them. The bolts holding the cat to the manifold were difficult.
When I took the old cats, on seeing the Jaguar part number plate which is welded to the cat, they were instantly able to give a price quote. That was a place in Swindon. I think it was :- https://platinumrecoveries.com/about-us/

Hi Andy,
Well progress. The CAT supplier is BM catalysts Mansfield Notts NG18 5DL. website :-https://www.bmcatalysts.co.uk/

I can also tell you that I have cracked the Foxwell NT530 diagnostic and yes it does read all the modules on my car.
The missing bit is a set of instructions as to how to use it!
The opening screen suggests that one can allow the unit to find the car details automatically or set them manually. Auto does not work and if one follows the manual path one option is "XJ series". Wrong, on older vehicles one must select "other vehicle" and then select the VIN range. Also it's not clear when the ignition must be on but engine not running and when it must be running.
Purchase directly from Foxwell website at 144 euros. That price includes a single car manufacturer (land rover Jaguar) but the code is not loaded and one must search around to find the load process which uses a USB link to a pc and the website.

Hope that all helps

all the best
Ken
