Front suspension - replacement of bits

Postby wsa » Sat Jan 23, 2010 11:16 am

Finally sickened by the loss of 2 more front tyres due to uneven wear, I have ordered a kit from BritishParts for a replacement of bushes, ball joints, etc. A local garage, owned by a friend, will do the job. Joe, you mention a maintenance sheet, in answer to another member's question. Will this help us with any iitems peculiar to the XJ8 and if so, could you email one to me? Also, does anyone have all the correct figures for the geometry of the X308? The garage has a computerised gizmo for setting up all the alignments but I have read that these very useful machines can have incorrect parameters in their software. Any other helpful comments from members would be appreciated.

geometry

William........im not aware of any maintenance sheets for the 308. But i do have my geometry checked and adjusted locally with a laser machine at my local tyre depot.
Any depot or garage using these machines would (or should have) the details of almost any car make and model one would think.
You may have hit the nail on the head with your purchase of the bushes as a kit but have both sides done together.........Joe

Hi Joe - thanks for the quick response.
Regarding the maintenance sheet, I had read a reply on the BB dated 21 November 2007 which stated "no Haynes manual for the 308 as yet - maintenance sheet is on the way".
Can I assume that this job can be done by any competent garage i.e. there are no nasty problems peculiar to the x308?
My local garage has the figures for the x308 geometry but you know the computer expression "rubbish in - rubbish out". I was wondering whether anyone had a set of figures which I could check against the one's in the local machine. I have heard of these things having incorrect data.
best regards

machine selection

Postby joejag308 » Mon Jan 25, 2010 3:24 pm

William there used to be an issue with the geometry of Jaguars re the "floating back axle" it evidently was a pig to sync in with the rest of the suspension settings......but that was overcome a long while ago.
Most modern machines are only as good as the operator who is operating the machine but now there are fewer snags so its safe enough to go with most machines without any problem. I cant see anyone going to the lengths of buying a machine to make money with and not being able to operate it........Joe
