Help with steering jumps

I was turning the car in the car park yesterday and on full lock the wheel seemed to suddenly be able to, shall we say move that little bit extra...
When I went to move the car today and drive down the road the wheel would seem to turn as if it was slipping a cog or something. I felt that I wouldn't be sure it would stay in a straight line or I could loose all steering all together.
So I stopped and left it at a friends.
Does anyone have an idea what it could be.

When that happened to me, many many years ago in a Triumpgh 1500, I needed a new streering rack.

Did anyone - like Adam perhaps - make progress on why power steering can suddenly develop a lumpy feeling and generate noises on lock? The level of my fluid was low and i topped it up which seemed to help but it still makes an odd noise on turning and sounds rather unhappy sp I would welcome advice.

Keith it initially sounds like wear, the amount of work the rack has had to do in its life so far is down to the driving of any owner its had. If like you say the fluid was low it does need a good looking at as the fluid doesn't disintegrate / evaporate.
When you topped up the fluid did you centre the rack by turning the steering from right to left and left to right fully with the engine running to centralise the rack...........check for obvious leaks by leaving a clean sheet of paper under the steering rack over night or a few days if possible to see if any new fluid has come out.....clean any unions off around the pipes .........if there is no leakage check the level again and maybe it could be a high spot that has developed with the low fluid in the past........so as they usually tell you "let it develop".........Joe
