Handbrake Adjustment

Hi Guys,

I'm a new owner to XJ8 but experienced with Series III XJ12s, where taking the slack out of the handbrake cable was easy-peasy.

What is the routine for adjusting the handbrake on the XJ8? I'm pretty sure it is the cable stretching again, as the brakes operate OK, once on, but there is just too much handbrake travel for my comfort.

I'm not frightened of skinned knuckles but some guidance would be good.

this is a job i have to get on with in the next few days and have been reading up on it,

the handbrake works by pressing a pair of shoes to the inside of the rear brake disc,

remove the rear wheel and take all recommended safety precautions.

adjustment is made by way of an access hole in the disc when rotated round to the top , a toothed wheel can be seen through the hole, turn this wheel using a flat screwdriver until the mechanism tightens to the disc not allowing it to move, then, turn back a little to allow free movement of the disc,

do the same on the other side of the car, and you will have adjusted them

bear in mind you may have to either ' rough -up ' the shoes a little or even get new ones ( including disc ? ) to get proper operation of the handbrake

Thanks BB - just what "George"* needed,

Did the job yesterday. The adjusters in the brakes were good but I found that the cable had a load of slack. Dead easy to take up a few turns on the adjuster. George now happy on any slope.
