new discs

Postby Brakebuster » Sun Aug 26, 2007 5:58 pm

my car had new pads a few weeks before i got her six months ago, and i have done 7k miles since then,

trouble was , the discs were not in great condition with quite a lip worn on the outside edge showing excessive wear to the disc

i have now got a new set of discs and pads to put on the car, which i hope to do tomorrow with luck

BB :)

well, i got down and dirty with the front discs today

it went better than i thought it would but with one little hiccup, will come to that in a mo

took of the front wheel, after ensure she was securly jacked up and supported, safety first :D

then removed the anti-rattle spring clip and the covers from the guide pins on the back of the calliper , thats when the hic-up happened, how the hack do i get the guide pin out ??? looked at it a few times before i discovered that i had to use a star bit in the middle of the pin, thirty seconds later they were out, this enables the caliper and pads to be lifted off the carrier and away from the disc after a little levering to move the piston back a few mm's , secured the calliper and removed the pads, this was cleaned up and copper slip was applied to all relevant surfaces,

then the support bracket had to come off, two 17mm bolts on the back that were, to say the least, very tight, but they came with the aid of a knuckle bar and a lump hammer

then the disc could come off, its a tight fit and slight corrosion made it bind a little, but said lump hammer gently tapped it from behind while turning the hub so it came off even,

got the new disc out of the box and used some cleaner to get rid of the transit grease , copper slip again on the hub and mounted the disc , then the calliper carrier with the two 17mm bolts, put the new pads in the caliper and offered it up and put the guide pins back in , while i was doing this i found it useful to use two of the wheel nuts to hold the disc on nice and square ,

then it was the anti-rattle spring, check everything was tight and put the caps on the guide pin covers, replaced road wheel and tightened the nuts in an opposite configuration to ensure it was on square, dropped it to the floor and tightened the nuts up again

did the same for the near side and that's a full set of front discs and pads changed , total job from begining to end took me three hours, but the second wheel took half the time of the first one , lol

reason for changing them was the discs were worn so that a pronounced lip was on the outside and inside of the disc, even though new pads had been fitted a few weeks before i bought her,

test drove the car after ensuring i had a hard pedal and a few times up and down the drive

now i think my handbrake pads need adjusting ,
