Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement

Hello fellow X308 owners.
I had to change my N/S/R wheel bearing due to feeling some play when checking them before the MOT.
It was an advisory on the MOT when I purchased the car 5 years ago and found the hub nut was not at the correct torque and the play went when tightened up but now it's back so a new bearing it is.
Thought I'd give a quick run down of whats involved.
No special tools needed but you do need a hub puller,this is the type I used.

3 Jaw Gear Puller

Once you have the car securely supported on axle stands slacken the handbrake cable so you can disconnect it from the connecting clip and pull the cable through the equalizer.Then there is a clip that holds the cable to the suspension mounting bracket,remove clip so the cable can be pulled through the hole later.
Remove the wheel and slacken off the hub nut slightly.I did this with the opposite wheel on the ground to stop the hub from turning.
Now the brake caliper,bracket and disc have to come off along with the handbrake shoes.Also remove the ABS sensor which is behind the back plate on top of the hub carrier.
Remove hub nut and collar.
Using the hub puller pull the hub from the drive shaft splines(It came off easier than expected,I had read on other forums that they can be a job to get off sometimes).
Mark wishbone at pivot pin eccentric flange so you can put it back in exactly the same position.
Slacken pivot pin and then the carrier can be moved away from the drive shaft.
Remove pivot pin and the hub carrier can be removed from the car,pulling the hand brake cable through the suspension mounting bracket.
I did not remove the back plate or the hand brake cable from the carrier.
Now you have to remove the hub from the carrier.
I did this by using a socket to push the hub through from the back of the carrier,the ABS rotor

ABS Rotor

is just a push fit and comes off once the hub is removed.
Then it's just a case of removing the old bearings and putting the new ones in.

New Wheel Bearings

Easier if you have access to a press but I did mine supported on wooden blocks using drifts and a heavy hammer.

It all worked out well and managed to drift the new bearings in without any problems.
Followed by the new oil seals.
So long as you use the same spacers that go in between the bearings the end play will be the same.

Bearing Spacers

Put the hub back into the carrier and put the ABS rotor back on(push fit).

ABS Rotor Refitted

Install hub and carrier back onto car and job done as they say.I think I was quite lucky in that everything came apart without to much trouble(which makes a change for me).
You need to adjust the handbrake for proper operation once everything is back together.
Torque settings are:
ABS sensor bolt 7-10 Nm
Pivot pin nut 88-110 Nm(ensure the marks you made align)
Hub nut 304-336 Nm

Good evening Andy,

I've just been reading through your July 2021 posts about changing rear wheel bearings. You state no special tools required, but elsewhere I've read special tool #204-195 is required to remove the ABS reluctor ring. I plan to entrust this work to my local garage, but first want to clarify the job can be completed without special tools.

The tool you refer to is meant to help stop the hub from turning when you loosen or tighten the hub nut.

I took the center cap off the wheel,put the wheel back on the car,lowered the car and undid the hub nut.
Did the same to tighten the hub nut.
Your garage should have a generic tool to do that job.
The ABS reluctor ring is just a push fit on the rear hubs but the front hubs are different.
You will need this tool to remove the front ABS reluctor ring which is threaded on.

I have not done a front one yet but I'm sure that time will come
I had read about drive shafts being stuck in the hub and all sorts of horror stories but mine came apart very easily.
Did not even need a hub puller to pull the hub from the shaft.
I take it you have a workshop manual.
If not let me know and I will email you one.

Thanks for clarifying that Andy.

Some years ago I had both front wheel brgs changed on my current XJR, and that job was undertaken by a Jaguar specialist due to the special tool requirement. But having noted your comments, I think my local garage should be able to take care of the rear bearing change.
