Is yours a manual? A bad handbrake is usually down to lack of use on the automatics - but a bad handbrake will fail the MOT so it can't be that bad? Maybe you need it adjusted or new shoes fitted? My car failed its MOT because of it so i am all too aware of it now  New shoes sorted that problem out

if it is a 308 it WILL be an auto, I would check, clean and adjust and if needed replace the handbrake shoes, this cures most problems
