BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL

Postby joejag308 » Wed Jul 15, 2009 7:28 pm

Im surprised we haven't had an article re the common question i keep getting asked re the 308 brake pedal travel..........
i have just had an irate member who is very upset he has bought a pup as the brake pedal travel is scaring him silly with the spongy feel and late braking.
I myself had this worry with my Daimler, but after consulting with Dave Bye of West Riding Jaguar who does a good amount of Jaguar racing re the soft pedal travel and he says its quite normal......im getting used to it now, but i did have the brake fluid changed and the brakes bled (which did give me peace of mind) but not much improvement on the pedal travel.
Another option is to have the "flexi" brake pipes changed to the braided type this does give a bit more stiffness to the pedal travel.
HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD A PROBLEM, OR HAD AN IMPROVEMENT DONE
please give us some options if you have .........Joe

The normal X308 brake pedal can feel a little soft to some people, depending on what they were used to on other cars,or merely "progressive" to others.I find the "pedal" on my X308 does have a slightly soft feel to it but the brakes are progressive, very effective and respond very well to even the lightest touch.
Brake fluid is "hygroscopic" by nature,(it readily takes up moisture) which degrades it over time and increases the softness of the pedal,as well as the travel.
Jaguar advise changing the brake fluid(on the service sheet) every two years and mine was done on the last service by CFS Motors.
They advised that for the first fifty miles or so after a fluid (or brake pad)change the pedal travel would feel longer and the pedal would feel softer than normal, which indeed was the case.
I am a firm believer in the adage..."if it aint broke..don't fix it"
But others may think differently.........
The member concerned would do well to have his brakes checked by an experienced professional who knows the cars....to put his mind at rest.

Forum information

Dave going on what has been discussed so far the recommended info I can gather is.....
Because of performance and cost, plus the reliability of the standard equipment, is to stay with the format I myself have ....
Standard for the model pads, standard for the model vented discs, non standard braided hoses and normal formula brake fluid, plus the usual good bleeding techniques.......
The options and extras over and above standard that are available are at a high cost (dont forget normal servicing replacement costs) and although while giving some improvement, its not enough improvement to justify the cost for a normal usage standard car ....
This is the format for any information I give out then if they come back with any uprated ideas then I give them the other options at their own risk.......so Brembos and non standard pads I give as an option...... then leave to their own choice,.......... but recommend on behalf of the forum the basic for the model standard stuff...........thanks again ....Joe
