Gearbox oil change
I have read some of the postings on this forum regarding changing the oil in the gearbox. I would welcome comments from forum members regarding my dilemma. My 1999 3.2L V8 X308 has never had the gearbox oil changed. Now as it is nearly 21 years old, I wonder whether I should get it changed. The car has only undertaken 61,000 mile since new and has no gearbox issues whatsoever. Your feedback will be most helpful.
Re: Gearbox oil change
Doug,
Absolutely do it! I'd be doing it at 60k if the car was just 4 years old. With your 21-year old oil, I believe that it's even more imperative that you get it done asap.
Good luck
Paul

Re: Gearbox oil change
Agreed totally.
Even lowish mileage oil which is ancient will oxidise and degrade with the passage of time. Fresh oil is definitely required at the earliest possible opportunity. A good local independent Jaguar garage would get that done for you in a jiffy. You might also get the differential oil changed whilst the car is on the ramp. Only a couple of litres of oil needed. Both jobs could be done in about an hour so your labour charge and VAT is unlikely to damage your pocket too badly.

Re: Gearbox oil change
Hi Doug,
Also it is worth thinking about relacing the pressure regulator within the lower valve body with the TransGo replacment.
The replacement regulator reduces the risk of the dreaded A-Drum failure.
Have read abot it here:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8- ... de-179012/
I did mine and it drives even smoother than it did before(and I thought it was preety good before)
Also make sure you use the correct oil and follow the correct refill method(Very Important).
Good luck.
Take care.
Andy

Re: Gearbox oil change
Thanks to you all for your comments. I have ordered parts and oil from British Car Parts and expect delivery sometime next week. Then I have to fit it! Hopefully, it won’t be to complicated. At least I can have the use of a ramp at work.

Looking at the SNG Barratts parts catalogue, there appears to be 4 pressure regulators (JLM20220). Are you suggesting to change all or one particular one? If one, which one?
Re: Gearbox oil change
Hi Doug,
None of those, they look like solenoids.
This is the part that I replaced: I purchased mine from the U.S.A. link provided:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from ... *&_sacat=0
Hope that helps.
Take care.

Re: Gearbox oil change
Checking out various 'You Tube' video's it appears that to fit the PR Valve, I will need to remove the Valve Body from the gearbox. Those video's shown have the gearbox out on a bench which makes it simple'ish! To me it looks complicated and errors can occur. And what about them suggesting to put the PR Valve in a freezer overnight before fitting! Did you do this????
Re: Gearbox oil change
Hi Doug,
I replaced mine with the gearbox in the car and using axle stands.
Once the filter is removed you can see the lower valve body.
Once removed you can take it to your bench to replace the valve.
If you read this thread from the American Jag Forum it explains every thing you need to do.
Also gives the instructions in a PDF that come with the new valve.
Here's the link again:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8- ... de-179012/
If your at all nervous about doing it then don't.But it is really easy to do.
Also I work on my own with no help(I prefer it that way).
Yes I followed the instructions and put the new valve in the freezer, went in the valve body a treat.(The cold shrinks metal)
Hope that helps a bit.
Any other questions just ask.
Good luck.
