Checking the gearbox fluid level - XJR

Hello,
Could anyone please advise the procedure for checking the level of the auto transmission fluid? I'm referring to the MB 'box in the XJR model - I recently purchased the accessory dipstick.

Hi John,
Sorry I missed your post,I have this from a PDF I have on checking the fluid level on an XJR.

Reading when cold - between max and min (25ºC range).
Precise checking is done at 80ºC.
Once to temperature the oil level must be between the max and min (80ºC range).
Perform cold and hot checks with engine running.
After driving about 20km in the urban cycle, the oil in the gearbox will have a temperature of around 80 ˚ C.

Hello, I am new to XJR ownership, and have just changed the transmission fluid in my 2000 XJR, I am about to check it, and have the dipstick etc ready to go.
Maybe a stupid question, but why is there such a difference between the fluid level at 20 C and 80 C ? the fluid can't expand like that under temperature, does another fluid circuit open or close with temperature?
I am sure I am missing something obvious

I checked mine at full operational temperature after about 15 miles.
I did this because I was in city traffic jam for 30 mins and I noticed reluctance to come out of first for age’s afterwards after getting to the outskirts of the city. Then I noticed warning light on dash “engine coolant level low”.
As I had already picked up my daughter and her boyfriend for dinner I pressed on as I was late.
The coolant warning went on and off… after reaching my destination I left her and then checked the water level.. didn’t seem that low so I topped it up with a pint of mineral water from the restaurant.
No more warning light.
This morning I got the engine and box up to temperature and used the dipstick- she was registering at just below the max scale of the 80 degree.
Oil looked fine.
I’m thinking the oil got really hot and stressed the electrical connector again… it happened in summer’21 so may well be soft.
Does anyone have a different opinion?
I’m tempted to just try and get a new seal for it and ask my mechanic to fit it..
