Oil change on gearbox

Postby VikingJag » Sun Sep 24, 2017 2:42 am

Hello,

I am new to the forum and to the UK. As a foreign post-grad student I figured something quintessential British was needed in form of transport. So I bought an '02 XJ8 SE with 91' miles on the clock with full service history and seems very well taken care of. Having driven the car for a few days now I discovered today the occasional tiny delay in engaging reverse. The car shifts smoothly and no noises from the transmission.

My question is if this merits a transmission oil change or more? And if so if anyone knows a good specialist near Edinburgh that could do the job?

Thanks in advance

- Mathias

80k is the recommended mileage for Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter change.
Previously there was no mileage published -- in common with other motor manufacturers Jaguar were saying "It's filled for life, sir!" :?

Don't know any independent Jaguar specialists in Edinburgh, sorry
Gone: '59 Mark I, '56 Mark VIIM, '59 Mark IX, '01 XJ8 Sovereign 4L LWB, '01 XJ8 Sport 3.2L, '01 XJ8 Exec 3.2L
Current: '03 Strange Rover L322
Completing re-trim: '73 Owen Sedanca 4.2L
Now being re-built: '61 Mark IX with 4.2L

If the gearbox has never been done before, then it definitely needs doing. 80k may have been appropriate when the car was new, but even then I would suggest that 60k was the right figure. Even ZF who made the gearboxes said that 70k was the limit. I would recommend that the boxes in an x308 need doing every 40k max nowadays.

I'm sure Rob Jenner will be along soon to give you the name of a good independent garage near Edinburgh!

Good luck

As far as I know it has not been done. Fantastic, want to have it done by someone with experience.

Thank you Paul
