X308 ATF temp sensor?

Postby richard582 » Fri Jun 16, 2023 11:21 am

New to me XJ8 X308 second edition 2002MY 3.2 normally aspirated

Had a fault come up in the hot weather yesterday of (I didn't have my iCar Soft 930i with me) "Transmisssion fluid temperature sensor fault". This fault was read by Green Flag's technician on his generic OBDii reader. He also reported that there were no engine faults listed. Had just collected from Surrey Jaguar who had it in for another diagnostic fault. They said they couldn't find any fault at cold so they just cleared all faults stored. I only got as far as 15 miles away from their workshop before "Failsafe Mode" revs-up-revs-stop started. Luckily I was opposite a filling station that had space enough. So was recovered back to Surrey Jags by Green Flag.

It gets worse -- Been onto Manners, Barratts, and main agent -- all can't find specified temperature sensor. This could be a mis-diagnosis of course of the Green Flag's roving mechanic's reader. So have asked Surrey to check what's being read this time on their proper diagnostic in the Gearbox section

Meantime. does anyone know the location of this ATF Temperature sensor? And a proper name for it? Thanks for any reply -- Richard

Ferreting around and asking Auto-Box specialists managed to find why Manners, Barratts, and even main dealer couldn't find said ATF Temperature Sensor. Apparently it's part of the ZF5HP24 loom that's inside the gearbox sump cover.
Part # LNC3380AA which no-one's got. Any hints where I might go for it?

Autoreserve, Eurojag and SNG Barratt are my usual ‘go to’ places for parts. EBay??

Richard,

Not sure who told you that no-one has the wiring loom LNC3380AA. A quick check on Jaguar's parts website and it seems it's still available from them. Therefore you could also buy it from SNG or David Manners if you wanted (although you'll be able to get it cheaper from Jaguar if you can negotiate a discount from your dealer - I usually get 10% at least).

Cheers

Thanks for all the replies... Main agent found one, apparently the ATF Temperature Sensor is inside the shrink wrap on this wiring loom. And the loom lays in the ATF in the bottom of the pan (?) Got one yesterday and sent it down to workshop. Was surprised previous workshop said they couldn't do the job...

Does the radiator on a normally aspirated 3.2 X308 SE have an ATF cooler at the bottom of the rad? Just a thought as that might be giving a restricted flow... Which would account for me having a no problems' drive from collection in Inverness to Glasgow (overnight stop) Glasgow to Barnsley (stop) then Barnsley to southeast London (single Failsafe Mode went into roadside cafe, hour later started and away again without problems). All my failsafe problems started two days later after a park up outside my house.
Only 68k miles... But been standing about for some months on and off

Richard,

Well done on getting it sorted.

I'd hate to speculate, but if the car was on its original fluid then it was over 10 years overdue for a change! The biggest problem with the autoboxes on x308s is lack of fluid changes.

Now that you've had it done, I would also do it again next year whether you've done 500 miles or 5000 miles. Unless it had a powerflush done just now, it still has a high percentage of dirty fluid in it because the bulk of fluid lies within the torque converter, oil cooler and oil cooler lines (you have a gearbox oil cooler as an integral part of the main radiator).

Hopefully, your problem has now gone away, next time you do a fluid change, see if you can get a powerflush done.

Good luck

Thanks for the encouragement, Paul. The car's down at GDP (Greg Hand's old XJ workshop near Thame) now. Spoke with Greg on Thursday who says he's just got the ATF and new filter and my sent down new loom that has the temperature sensor in it. So hopefully I'm in the queue this week for the work.
Dunno yet the condition of the old ATF, nor whether it smells, nor if its got any granules in it. Or even the rad if the ATF cooler's good. But there was no roughness in gear change up to about 15 minutes into driving, hopefully no damage has been done. The docs only show a top up of ATF and that was in 2017!

No gearbox problems with any of my three previous X308s, I changed the ATF on two of them, the last was black!
I've got a Range Rover L322 too (BMW M62 engine) with the same gearbox. And that's smooth as silk... Now on 147k miles

Well done Richard!

I'm sure the car will benefit from the fluid change even if it was running ok prior.

I admit that I have a bit of an obsession with fluid changes working on the basis that oil is cheap and engines, gearboxes and diffs are expensive.

I've not been lucky enough to own any of my Jags since new, but have always changed the gearbox oil as soon as I bought them and then an absolute max of 20k mile changes after that.

I've also got an L322 and, like you I'm sure, think it's an astonishing vehicle. Mine has the 4.2 Jag S/C engine, and I'm just about to change the gearbox oil again!

Good luck with the gearbox work next week,

Just an update: Greg changed the ATF, and ATF filter reporting that it seemed OK with not much granulation at the filter. He then changed the loom that includes the ATF temperature sensor, having to take down the gearbox valve body to reach round and change the loom. Replaced all and the fault -- "ATF temperature sensor faulty" then going into Failsafe Mode -- more prevalent than before.

So has changed the ECU but I haven't heard since its delivery from Berks Jag components. He tells me he's got all the kit there to do the re-program to match my old one. On the Range Rover L322 the mileages have to match with those stored in the dash. And of course the IMMO functions have to match the key. My L322 is with the BMW M62 engine [ -- same as Vikki Butler-Henderson drives as her daily. But I digress -- it's her fault! ]

Do you or anyone reading know if the LNG1410CE ECU has had any manufacturer Flash ROM updates to it? Greg tells me the the 4 Litre version has a fan in the ECU but the 3.2 version didn't. He says the leads for the fan are just taped up inside the ECU box. A new ECU fan costs £81+ Where's Maplins when you need them ;

Yes, apparently XK8s had an ECU fan, export X308s had it, as did all supercharged. Anyway, it's fitted and I've got the car back. Been around in it for the last month and AFA the Failsafe Mode is concerned it's gone.
Greg found the ECU box too hot to touch, found that the cooling hole had been blocked by some bright spark putting the Parrot speaker over it <duh!> So he fitted a second hand fan and moved the speaker... No wonder it'd done only 68k miles with five owners. Estate wrangle my eye! Later owners had this fault, couldn't fix it, and so shoved it on!
Anyways, their loss is my gain. Or nearly...

Having found the ECU too hot to touch, Greg found another. But that started the car OK on install. But the car wouldn't start the following day. He put my old ECU back and that started it. But it does now have hot start issues (but no cold start issues) And the difference in starting was that before (with the faults on it) the starting was pretty instant on first turn of the key and first engine turn over. Now at cold it needs about 2 - 3 seconds of turnover, and when hot (but not every time) 3 - 7 seconds of turnover before it catches.
It being such an intermittent fault, I don't know where to start...

Obviously something changed at Gregs that's not quite right now... but what <ponder>

Just been out to it in this cool evening, starts from cold OK. But with the coolant showing ¼ it won't. It just turns over without any firing. Switch off and wait 10 secs, switch on again and IGN it fires. Hmmmm... Coolant temperature sender on the way out but not quite yet? No faults showing on my iCarsoft i930

Is there an "adaptation" process available for the XJ8 X308 AJ27 engine? It's not in my iCarSoft i930. But is for the BMW-engined M62 Range Rover L322

Still chasing down this poor start problem. Have now changed the Coolant Temperature Sender for new, the existing appeared to have corroded pins. The effect was to not display any temperature on dash. Then to stall the engine with a "Restricted Performance" flag. Disconnecting the new sensor's plug and re-inserting again seemed to have cured that. And the starting fault still has returned -- slightly better cold start (?) but no improvement to hot start. It needs two or three seconds turnover without starting. A switch off, and twist of the key again results in immediate start. I just dunno. Nothing shown on my iCarSoft

Is there such a thing as "adaption" for a 2002 XJ8 X308 se 3.2L normally aspirated?

Answering my own question, there is such a thing as "adaption" Apparently it's available with AutoLogic kit.

This site is useful. https://www.obd-codes.com/jaguar-drive-cycle

If anyone's following this thread, or given up the will to live
