XJ8 Model year 2000. Differential Oil

Postby Ianblair » Mon Mar 04, 2013 2:17 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know what a good replacement diff. oil for an xj308 would be?

I see one post where David Marks has replied; saying he uses, quote "TRX SYNTH I think" unquote.

Could someone please be more specific. I tried an oil supply outlet as David recommended , but they weren't too specific either, in fact they stated that the xj8 had a limited diff. fitted and as far as I know this is not correct.

regards

Hi Ian,
This site gives lots of AJ-V8 info and specs including the diff oil

http://www.super7thheaven.co.uk/Jaguar-AJ-V8

Click on the PDF link for AJ-V8 downloads - specs 97 to 04 and go to page 43 in the PDF file

Hope it helps,
Best regards,
Another Ian

Hi Ian,

Nice site. I'm looking for a good substitute for the Spirax.

Hi all,

After much research eventually went with Shell TS90 Super Oil (Jaguar Pt.no. JLM2037) purchased from OPIE oils (£13 per litre).
According to Spec. specifficaly made for Jaguar XJ,XJR,XK etc.

Still can't believe that a company like Jaguar (Ford) can design "sealed for life oil items" i.e. Transmission & Differential.

I can; the simple process of changing the lubricant and filter risks introducing dirt/contaminants. Early XJS's specified greasing the front hubs every 6,000 miles, and lasted maybe 30-50,000 miles before the bearings went. My facelift has "don't grease" hubs, you're supposed to take them apart once every 30,000 miles and check for wear, and then regrease. I'm not sure when they were last done, before I bought it 15 years ago...

I guess you end up choosing between regular changes, which make themselves necessary, and infrequent changes, which might prove expensive. (At the price of the gearbox oil, how many oil and filter changes equal one gearbox?)

Hi Paul,

I only drive the car in summer. Dave Marks did the Gearbox Oil & Filter change a few years ago and I'm having the Diff. Oil changed this month. At my age and the amount of miles I cover these are one of's and won't be getting done by me again. I'm a retired Aircraft Electronic Engineer and College Lecturer 25years at both. Like I said "I don't believe it". Happy Jaguar motoring.

Hi,

Just had an e mail from David Marks. They use Millers Transax 75/80 but also says any good synthetic oil of that weight would be suitable.
