when drive is selected it takes 2 or 3 seconds before the gears engage also when engaged if a qiuckish pull off is required such as at a give way the car hesitates for about 1 to 2 seconds there is a thud then my car drives perfect moving up the gears with absolute smoothness anyone had similar prob or advice

Doesn't sound good the fault is due to pressure in the gearbox. You can try replacing the gearbox filter and oil but the only real way to fix this is to replace the box. (or get a overhaul) i have advised alot of my customers to try midland automatic transmission. very very helpfull!!!
