Hi
This very cold weather causes fault messages ie. Gearbox Fault, Trac Off, Restricted Performance to scroll in the message window when starting my 2000 X Reg XJ8. If I let it warm up until the temp gauge reaches its normal setting, switch off, wait a few seconds and restart all these messages go away and the car drives as normal. The battery was new last year and have just had a new alternator fitted. Anyone else experienced this sort of thing?
Regards
Peter
Warning Messages in the cold weather
Re: Warning Messages in the cold weather
Funnily enough, I saw a similar thing on a V6 S-type yesterday.
Switched off after a cold start, restarted and all was well again.
I suspect that the OBD module may not be that stable in depressed temperatures and possibly becomes unable to carry out an initial start up diagnostics run when very cold. Add to that a slightly lower battery terminal voltage in cold conditions and problems of a minor nature tend to show themselves.
Just my take on the matter.
Mike

Re: Warning Messages in the cold weather
i have also experienced this with a known good battery , until the car warms up
funny enough
my wifes MGF threw a fault code for the SRS yesterday , and then it went away ,
it must be that the electronics dont like such low temps

Re: Warning Messages in the cold weather
My X-350 decided yesterday morning, at minus 3 degrees, that it would play no sound through the speakers, told me that the there was no phone fitted (there was!) and couldn't find the multi-CD player (I know it's in the boot!).
I waited until it got warm and did a restart and it found everything!
Bizarre, wonder what happens to Jag owners in Finland?

Re: Warning Messages in the cold weather
Hi all,
Thanks for your experiences regarding cold weather faults. Fairly common by the sound of it, good old Jaguar. I was under the impression that Jaguar tested their cars in sub zero conditions during development, would have thought they might have spotted this! To be fair it dosen't seem to happen on my XK8 (W Reg) or my wife's X-Type (53) so I suppose its just a quirk of my XJ8.
If there are any other examples of this type of fault out there I would be interested to hear about them. It's nice to know one is not alone!
Cheers
Peter

DSC faulting is quite common. Switch off and back on again and the fault disappears. Usually cold weather related in my experience.
