Clock Illumination

Postby Mike1932 » Tue Sep 22, 2009 9:40 pm

Simple question - hopefully with a simple answer! The (time) clock in the centre of the dash is not illuminated when my lights are switched ON. Can someone advise please? Does it have it's own bulb? and if so, how does one get to it?
Thanks in anticipation,
Mike

Hi Mike

The clock does indeed have a bulb. It is part number LNC 5180AA.

It is a long time ago since I changed mine but from memory you have to remove the wood panels that surround the dashboard dials, the front of the glovebox (and airbag!) and then the one surrounding the air-con vents and clock. The panels are friction fitted and held on by little retaining pins. As scary as it seems as you do it, they do just pull off.

You can then get at the screws that hold the vent module in place which also holds the clock.

Or you could buy a torch or a watch with a back light!

Thanks to both! I think I'll follow the suggestion to buy a torch! Pretty poor show though isn't it?

Interesting comments re the clock bulb......i have a 1999 Daimler super 8
with an analogue clock..........i went and looked up in my hand books and found no reference to the bulb replacement or the existence of a bulb on any bulb charts........the only reference to the clock is to tell you how to adjust it for time......it doesn't list it in the dashboard illumination either.
So you must have a different model in NZ........strange that ....Joe

MIKE.............just a thought you have tried the clock light at night with the ignition switch to the first position.....test by seeing if the radio ect is illuminated, this is where it is powered from ....not just by covering up any sensors.........just a thought .......Joe

Hi Guys,
Have spoken with the Jaguar Specialist I use regularly. He confirms that two wooden panels need to be removed - the one surrounding the clock and air vents plus the one covering the passenger air bag. This enables the clock/vents to be reached. I am getting the bulb (thanks for the Part No.) and he reckons on an hour's labour (£47) to fit it.
Sounds expensive just to be able to see what the time is at night - but I'm one of those guys who, if something is meant to work, wants it do to so.
Will post again when the job's done!
Thanks again,
Mike

Mike it goes to show even with a so called simple fix for a clock on a normal car with a Jaguar its always something more to correct it but i now have to check mine out at night evidently as it comes on when its dark along with the radio display, thats the same evidently, when its daylight it doesnt light up.........lets hope the problem is sorted ........Joe

No problem. I would say half an hour should be achievable though.

I have had mine off twice, once to change the bulb then again to upgrade to the later clock. I think the later clock looks more classy and is easier to read.

Does your cigar lighter bulb work? Mine doesn't and no one can work out how to change it without taking the centre console right out.

I have had the centre arm rest to pieces and the trim around the gear lever off and it is impossible to get to it without extremely long fingers.

If you pull the ashtray out you can see it through a small hole.

Job "jobbed"! Bulb obtained from Main Dealer in Southampton; they had to order it but it arrived next day. The Part No. was invaluable as they had previously supplied the wrong clock bulbs to my Jag Specialist. He's happy too 'cos he now has the Part No. - and he fitted it in approx 20 minutes and charged me £15.

Anyone know the correct Part Nos for (a) the temperature display and (b) the AC/Auto bulbs? ........... or am I pushing my luck? :)
