Key (not fob) re-programming

When I bought my Daimler Super V8 nearly 2 years ago, it came with 2 keys and 2 fobs, all working fine. Some time later I found ( I think in the rear centre armrest box) a packet with 3 brand new keys in it. These keys all fit the locks but none have been programmed to communicate with the 'other half' of the transponder on the column. I would quite like to get them fully functional - apart from being able to access the car and boot and lock the glove box with them they are otherwise useless. Can't really imagine why they were there but Jaguar Cars owned the car for the first year or so and may have had some reason for multiple drivers.
I'm sure I could pay silly dealer prices to get them programmed but what exactly is involved? I now have an iCarsoft CR code reader (thanks to PTR) is there any way of using that unit or is something far more sophisticated needed? That unit knows that I have tried one of these keys in the ignition by throwing a P1260 code, easily erased without drama.
As there is no battery in the key head itself, it must be a passive device, so how does it all work?

Ian,
If they are standard Tibbes-style transponder keys, then you can go to a Timpsons key-cutting booth and they can do it cheaply if you give them your original key. I'm not sure if it's only the larger Timpsons stores but I got them to do a spare key on my x308 some years ago where I bought a blank transponder key on ebay and they cut the key and coded it.
Good luck

Thanks for that Paul,
My keys already fit the locks, so if they can actually do the programming bit, then I'm home and dry. Yes, they are Tibbe keys. I had wondered if there was a diy method, but will be on the Mainland in the Spring so I can check for a suitable Timpsons beforehand. Presumably they only need the working key(s)? And the new ones of course!

Ian

if i remember correctly , the owners manual describes the procedure , if not it is around here somewhere
but i do remember that once you put it in programming mode you have to code all the keys you have again , not just the new ones,

BB,
That's interesting! I never realised that you could diy programme the keys. I just thought you could only diy programme the fobs. Is there any chance you could dig out the instructions sometime?
Cheers

Thanks for that BB,
I have perused the manuals but it was a good while back when I got my first 3.2 XJ8 and didn't notice any info, but I would have only been 'man looking' so will be a bit more thorough this time.
I did find a piece on the web for programming Ford Tibbe keys and I assume some of this system is Ford derived. PATS 2 Ford system seems to be most like it. Needless to say, if I find a diy solution I will share it.

I’ve only got one fob and one key!
What’s the best way of getting replacements made?
Cheers

ok, another monster 'phone session - after many replies of "sorry mate, too old" (2001??? that's like yesterday?)
I managed to find a chap in Norwich PT Locks & safes and he said the key can be duplicated for around 80 quid. The fob , well, it can be for around 180 quid, but you don't really need the fob essentially it is just a luxury thing to have and at 180 quid for a new one I am tempted to agree, as it would just sit in the spare drawer depleting itself.
You need to go in there with the car to make sure it aligns, not just take the key into the workshop. So i will book in once i have her running properly.
cheers!

Hi Stuart,
When I bought my car it only came with one black key and one green(valet)key.
So I needed a fob.
Thought about getting one off eBay but then decided to get one from Jaguar in Saltash which is my nearest dealer.
£100 all in and even came with a battery, easy to programme to car

.
There are two types, one for early cars and one for later cars.
Thanks for the info and price on finding replacment keys.
Take care.
Andy

I managed to get a new fob from a shop in sheringham (fast lane) really helpful chap (another Stuart I think!) it’s an aftermarket one and the only thing is it doesn’t have the headlight button. Otherwise works fine.. 50 quid cash all in!
I should also be able to get another key programmed for around 40 quid from another contact in sheringham, but as my XJR is in for welding I will have to wait !

Stuart,
Getting hold of blank programmable Tibbes keys is pretty easy. There's always some on ebay. I took my XJ8 blanks to a Timpsons locksmiths shop who cut them and clone programmed them to my original one and it was really cheap. The only issue is that some Timpsons outlets didn't have the 5-cut Tibbes machines so ask them first. Worth a try.
Cheers
