Any recommended suppliers for water pump and Thermostat

Hi Everyone,

I need to replace my water pump and thermostat on my XJR as there is no evidence to suggest it's been done, can anyone recommend a decent priced supplier or at least a ball park figure you'd expect to pay for the parts. Also some suppliers offer reconditioned ones, is this a good or bad option? I'm personally favouring a new one depending upon the price difference.

every time

brand new and the latest metal impeller version, and they are only £50 plus the dreaded i think, i bought mine just over a year ago

same for the Thermostat, it will be the right one with the correct jiggle pin, that must always be installed correctly with the pin at the top to let the air bubbles through.... i think they were around £14, dont buy a seal, as it comes with the stat, i made that mistake

Which jaguar supplier did you get yours from, my "local" delaership which is still over an hour drive away has quoted the following, all prices are ex vat!!

Water Pump £91.06
Thermostat £30.46
Fitting £170

That lot makes it a dear do, even wiith the 5% JEC member discount offered

get quote, and dont forget to tell them your a JEC member to get between 10 & 15 % discount....

they know me very well in there, as i'm always getting bits for the XJS from Heritage orders that i have sent there for free , rather than paying postage to my door

Hi Brake Buster,

I've spoken to 3 Jaguar Dealerships now, one here in Cumbria, 1 in Newcastle and yours in Cheltenham. They all quote the same RRP's as above, Newcastle and Cheltenham will give 10% off for JEC memebership, Cumbria 5% although I might pester them to increase that to match the others. Looks like the prices have gone up.

The labour is quite a bit though, does it need to be done by Jag or can I get a local good mechanic to fit the parts when I've got them from Jag?

Also in your reply on my other post you mention

I have asked the 3 dealerships about this and they don't seem to know what I'm talking about. Do you have any more information on it?

i'm surprised the pump prices have doubled since i bought one last year, i will dig out my invoice and put up the part number and price

as for the ' modified tower ' its not a Jaguar part, and the dealerships wont know anything about them

the plastic the originals are made of go brittle, and can crack if worked on without extreme care

below is a link to the part on ebay , its the S type version, but they do one for the XJ8 and XK8 to , the online parts suppliers also sell them for a similar, if a little higher price

this is well worth installing if your draining down for the pump and stat, and will outlive the engine, i would also check your top hoses for swelling, as this is another known fault, and replacements are cheaper than a split hose on the side of the road

The plot thickens if you are for all intents and purposes a novice, how do you know if the hoses are swollen, are there stetch lines, signs of rubber perishing, do they just look swollen or oversized against the metal holes they clamp around?

I've emailed the ebay chap nicely asking if they offer JEC members a discount, it's worth a try...

yes, the hoses will look swollen compared to the collars , the usual culprit is the very short ( two inches ) hose at the top of the tower to the plastic pipe extension, these swell quite a lot, in fact i will be changing mine soon, along with a new tower ,

i cant seem to find my invoice ( amongst my thousands ) for the pump, but i'm sure it was £48 plus the Vat , but as i said, that was a year to eighteen months ago now

still, a £100 pump isnt that much compared to an overheated engine and the costs involved, as the plastic impellers are known to fail....

Thanks for all your help and advice, I have one more route to try which is to see if a friend can get the parts from the Jaguar Dealership through the trade which is a possiblity as he has a good relationship with one of the other garages in the same group. I'll let you know how that goes.

Needless to say I quite agree that either way at £48+VAT or £81+VAT the pump will be changed as the consequences of not doing it don't compare. Hopefully that's the last area that "must" be looked at before I can begin to consider nice things like exhaust, induction kit and remap.
