As mentioned in my previous post >>later>> just realised what you guys mean by oil cooler, the transmission oil (ATF) cooler. So not a mayonnaise maker then

Karumba... While everyone else is sitting in the garden enjoying the last of the autumn sun reading "Syd Snott -- My Life & Times (in his own words)" I'm reading the 126 pages you kindly sent me "V6/V8 Engine Repair Course Code: 168 (an automotive learning experience)" And very welcome it is tooMayonnaise would only be present if a head gasket had gone adjacent to an oil way or if a cooler had given up between the interface, Richard.
This link should help you.http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j& ... NwdrKUf4YQ

Re: Low Coolant Level
Would've posted the block diagram from the excellent study guide but .doc isn't allowed. Does say though that in the event of bearing failure, coolant will escape from the seal breather holes in the housing if the pump bearing seal fails
However, Surrey Jags (Croydon 0208 689 3333) did identify the water pump as leaking coolant, and that the bearings were also shot. Change out with system flush through and refill £280 inc. parts +VAT
Going the 11 miles from home at half way needed ¼L top up. At workshop's road entrance coolant low warning message and light came on again.
Mechanic commented that he thought removed pump was factory 0EM style and couldn't see any evidence of any previous change out -- realise there was some problems with plastic impellers at some point in this 3.2L's manufacturing life cycle ('98 to '02?) but if original from factory 120k miles shows just what '01MY water pumps were capable of
Return journey was all in slow-slow-stop rush hour traffic (London's south circular). Little difference in temp gauge was noticed, temperature indicated was still at half meter -- mebe the thickness of the needle difference reduction, if that.
Will do another Sniff Test in a month. Mauve "sniffed" fluid colour was hardly changed, if at all
Erm, XJR Year: 2002 Mileage: 238,668<----

Glad they were mentioned. Yes, they took in straight away after appointment diagnosis. I collected the following day. Re the magazine, I think this went to press a little later this month, Nigel and I discussed this today and he tells me that the magazine will probably arrive tomorrow or on Monday, local post delivery dependent.
Water pumps. Certainly an 01 car will have originally been fitted with the plastic impeller version. Indeed my 02 S-type was found to have one. Leakage from the front bearing was common, the impeller could slip on the shaft or indeed break up. The later pump is rather better with a metal impeller, better bearings and improved general front casing. Two extra bolts on the front case indicate that the later pump has been fitted. The design also feeds leakage coolant back into the system rather than just horsing it down the front of the engine. The new type pump is more robust and should be good for many more years service than the original version.

Re: Low Coolant Level
VW went thru this early plastic impeller nonsense for their water pumps too. They now only sell their new "improved" version which has a £30-odd rebate written into the price when you return your old OEM one. The "X" on the end of the part number indicates that they re-build them.
I'm due cambelt and water pump change on my Passrat next spring -- I've got a Geba metal impeller water pump from Germany on standby

Orange/pink is the typical colour. Blue is for mixed metal engines only.
This link gives details of appropriate year and coolant type. Page 100 will give you the info.https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j ... ZHx_S6bpuA

Yes, mine's a nice orange colour -- certainly much brighter than when bought -- that'll teach me to buy in another countryOrange/pink is the typical colour. Blue is for mixed metal engines only.

I'm only a simple chap but each is headed XJ - <measurement> then there's several sections. Some can be eliminated leaving two "All Right Hand Drive and Japan". Which for UK?

Re: Low Coolant Level
All RHD. Usually the only difference between RHD and LHD is the amount of camber set into the front wheel nearest the curb. This is supposed to act as bias to take account of the usual road surface which is often slopes the road surface towards the gutter. Idealism in my opinion. I always set my cars with equal both sides geometry for toe, camber and caster.

Re: Low Coolant Level
Mike... there's two "All Right-Hand Drive and Japan" entries each on p8 and p10.
Which are for us with a UK Sports?
The general heading is 1998 up to 2003 MY - Start VIN 812317
then there's
XJR Excluding NAS, and German Daimer Super-8
All Right-Hand Drive and Japan <figures>
On the same chart there's XJR NAS, and Comfort/Sports/Daimler Super-8
also with entries (this time different) for
All Right-Hand Drive and Japan <figures>
Toe (p12) has the same figures so no problem there; the rears (p29, p30) charts are clear

Re: Low Coolant Level
Japan cars, are practically the same as UK spec other than heat shields for Cats, and emissions , along with radio frequencies etc ,
so 99% of parts will fit as long as you take into account the differences ( and others ) above

Re: Low Coolant Level
Thanks BB... I'll go for:
"XJR Excluding NAS, and German Daimer Super-8 -- All Right-Hand Drive and Japan" then. Unless anyone knows better?
It's the later reference to Comfort and Sport that's causing me to hesitate before going to the Hunter-equipped alignment shop
BTW, on p41 is given Vehicle Ride Height. But doesn't say for what wheels fitted -- 16", 17", or !8".
Perhaps I'm missing something?

Re: Low Coolant Level
The ride height is not rim diameter dependent.
Regardless of what rim diameter is fitted, the extra rubber height ie profile percentage of the tyre takes that up. Essentially the rolling circumference length of all tyres and all rim sizes will remain the same.
Ride height may well change if the car is a sport spec. These cars generally have a slightly dropped suspension to help reduce body roll on cornering. Sport spring and damper rates and specs will also be different to comfort models.
Some wheel alignment businesses have great difficulty telling the difference between Jaguar XJ models. It is essential to ensure that the garage employed to adjust suspension angles is told exactly what model and year you are presenting them with. On one occasion I had a tracking place try to set my X350 up using X300 data!
Most garages equipped with even four wheel alignment gear can easily adjust toe and camber. What has them running in circles is caster. My alignment place has this problem. A good work around is to measure the wheel base length ie from the back edge of the rear rim to the back edge of the front rim taken across the wheel hub centres. If caster is correct, then the dimension should be exactly what the figure is in the spec sheets. If not, then a method of adjusting the dimension needs to be applied to bring that dimension to total correctness. I`ll stop now because I can set an S-type, XF or X350 up in my sleep. I`m not however familiar with the nuts and bolts on the X308 to advise further.
Hope that helps.
