Engine coolant

I've a 1998 reg'd 4.0L Sovereign and would like to know what Jaguar coolant I should be topping up with. I'm pretty certain its not the red coolant that seems to be used in current models but if anyone knows what the Jaguar part number or code is I'd be grateful.

dredru........i don't know if that model had the 4life coolant........one where you didn't top it up with water but just added the same coolant.
The theory being that it was meant to be for life (hence the name) if you had no leaks and the coolant didn't have to be taken out for maintenance it did what it says on the tin.........put it in and leave it for life. it also served as an engine rust preventative around the water jacket.
How you distinguish if it still has 4 life in i don't know.
Maybe an E Mail to dave Marks would be an advantage as i sometimes live in Dicks Days................unless some of our intrepid posters have another solution......Joe

Sorry Joe but you are a bit confused here.
The cooling system is not another "filled for life" issue.Jaguar recommend a change of coolant at 150.000 miles or 5 years whichever comes first.
The issue is that early cars used regular Ethylene Glycol based anti-freeze
which was replaced in later cars with a different formulation.An eco-friendly type of a different colour (red/orange) and they won't mix.
If you do mix them the coolant turns to a sludge and blocks everything up.
Cars that use the later type should have a label on or near the filler which clearly states that the modern type of anti-freeze must be used.....mine has.

Dave as opposed to being confused i wasnt meaning we had a sealed system in the 308 .......i was reffering to a top class coolant i have used for a number of years and it it still well reccomended......

Is this "magic fluid" cheaper than standard coolant ?
It appears to do the same job.

Dave Marks and my local main dealer have both confirmed that the older (1998) cars use the yellow coolant, part number JLM 204042.

I did have reservations re the type of coolant which was the "supposed best" to use, but im going back to usage away from my Jaguar days and only being used in my XJ40 when i bought a Jag Long Life was a coolant which at the time was revolutionary ....and still is a top product.
However, i did check with David Marks but due to his busy schedule he has only just replied...........

A 1998 car should take the conventional ethylene glycol antifreeze - yellow or green in colour normally, sometime blue.

Only later cars that have a warning sticker by the expansion tank take the later Long Life red antifreeze - this is from around 2000 MY on I think.

Unfortunately my age is showing here as Long Life was a product we used in medieval times while serving ones apprenticship on Vauxhall cars and is still rated as one of the top products to use.........Joe

my 99 car has the ' red ' coolant,

though that doesnt mean it wasnt fully changed early in the cars life by a PO......

just go with the colour thats in the expansion tank, if your not happy with doing that, get a complete system flush, which wouldnt be a bad thing, and then fill with whatever coolant you want, but stay away from topping up with water, as the minerals etc in the water can deposit and cause corrosion to the aluminium engine block

Thanks for that BB the long life coolant is supposed to be just for that purpose ....keeping the galleries clean and free from corrosion so it may sound expensive although these days £13 for 5 liters doesn't sound as bad as it was way back then.....but due to the non top up of water you must check for any leakage before using the Long Life as you don't have to remove it every year. It retains its viscosity for life unlike normal antifreeze...........Joe

Coming along incredibly late to this party, I have a 2001 Daimler Super V8 & a 2005 Jaguar Super V8. Do they both use the same coolant specification? Daimler plate says Long Life ref WSS-M97B44-D coloured orange. Not sure what spec the Jaguar is.

Yes,they both use the same spec coolant ie WSS-M97B44-D .
I use Genuine Ford Super Plus Premium Longlife Coolant.

WSS-M97B44-D

Which is exactly the same spec as WSS-M97B44-D .
