Engine paint?

My XJR had its engine replaced due to the Nikasil problem and according to the previous (and, before me, the only) owner, this was when the finish of the top cover was damaged. It looks like it has had something poured on it and around a third of the original engine colour is missing.
Has anyone any experience of respraying their engine? I'm not thinking of going in for a concourse event any time soon but it does stand out as a cosmetic eyesore whenever I top up my oil, washer fluid or whatever.
Does anyone know what colour the paint is? (SNG Barratt seem to have a range of engine spray paints available including a delightful orange... but nothing "normal" as far as I can see).
