difficult starting after moving car

if I start the car, move it on my drive and stop the engine, next time I come to start the only way to get it started is to put the throttle to the floor and keep turning the key, eventually it fires, is very rich but no warning lights and drives OK. No starting problems normally.

It's a common "fault" with the V8's - you are flooding the engine. The answer is a simple one. You need to get into the mindset of not moving the car unless you have to, and then if you do start it, leave it to warm up before switching it off. If you do it too often what can happen is that the car will backfire and blow up your airbox or even airflow meter
I should know, as I am now in that very situation having had an almost flat battery fail on me and cause the car to flood - and subsequently after fitting a new battery I have blown up my air box and she has backfired since then leaving me in the position of having to try and get her started the hard way (plugs out method) - this I am having difficulty getting done as I can't do it myself and my mechanic is reluctant to take on the job meaning I am going to have to get it transported to an independent jag mechanic 50 miles away
all of this occurs when I have no spare cash this week and broke my toe and could have done with the car as I can't operate the clutch in my parents car.... what a week...

Did you ask him if he could come to you?.......flooding is a regular event as we have heard but the blowing back is another story...( timing? ).....it does need a diagnostic check at least.........Joe

It's as much for them to come here as it is for me to go to them

I might as well get them to go over the whole car while they are at it as she is due for MOT in April. I also wanted the gearbox oil changed and the rear suspension is a bit noisy so I suppose it's an ill wind and all that.

if your V8 floods then simply take out the fuel pump relay in the boot, crank the car over for a few secs with full gas, when it starts to fire switch off and replace the relay. This method has worked for me dozens of times.

to restart a flooded XJ8 simply.........
(with a good battery)
press the accelerator pedal to the floor while starting ,
and keep it there,
the ECU picks up you have floored the pedal and actually cuts of the fuel supply by turning off all 8 injectors, once the engine has cranked a few times and the oil has got back into the liners increasing compression the car will start to splutter, raise the pedal slightly and she should come back to life with no issues,
you can get a little smoke out the back for a few seconds as the oil burns off
that is the official Jaguar restart for flooded engines of this kind

Unfortunately the foot to the floor method has not worked for me (even with a brand new battery) so I have to try the oil down the bores trick. My other problem is that its freezing cold outside and I have no garage and every time I make some time to go out to try and get her going myself it either rains or snows. And today I have a stinking head cold so have no energy to go out there anyway

cbr900rr.........thats a new one ive not heard of..........
However the more well practised methods as per Brake Buster....is a continuous posting in the forum.........but " short shifting" ie moving the car ten yards.....then turning it off while still cold ...until you close the garage doors...... is the most common cause of flooding.............let the engine run for a while until the temp gauge moves before you switch it off........this will prevent flooding in 99% of cases..............Joe
