as this has been highlighted in another post , all V8 owners must read this , this includes the XK8 as well......so tell anyone you know.....
it only applies to pre-1999 cars with the AJ26 engine though
if it hasnt already been done, your pre 1999 XJ8 or XK8 engine is due a FREE throttle body replacement, this includes labour to....
the TB has a tendency to cut out at motor-way speeds and stalls the engine, it will then restart with no problem and your on your way, but not fun if it happens in the outside lane........
Jaguar are fitting brand new replacements for all the affected cars for FREE , BUT ONLT TILL JUNE THIS YEAR , after that you have to buy the parts and pay for them to be fitted
all you need to do is......
phone your nearest Jaguar dealership, quote your VIN and tell them to see if the Throttle body replacement has been done to your car, if not they will offer to do it for you asap ,
DO NOT PAY TO HAVE THIS DONE !!!
get it done NOW , your life could depend on it
BB
post back here if you get it done......

BB,
Do you know what is the official Factory doc which states that this should be done?
I have been trying for a few weeks to gently persuade my dealer that I need this done. However, they say that there was no official recall for throttle body replacement. Also that there are no outstanding warranty items for my VIN.
I have also asked them if there was a Service Bulletin which recommended that the change should be done if a customer complained, but they can't seem to find that anything about that. I've also read somewhere that Service Bulletin S514 relates to it, but my dealer told me that S514 was for re-programming of the ECM which my car had done in 2000.
I think that the only way that I can persuade them is if I can quote the Service Bulletin and show them the exact wording which implies that I can have it done. If there's any chance that you can post the content here on the Bulletin Board, that would be great. Tks

Paul, Can't give you a Bulletin Number, but I had my 1998 X308 done - free of charge - by H A Fox of Southampton - last September. As suggested by BB, I simply phoned, said that I understood there was a Jaguar recall for the throttle body, was asked my VIN number and was told my car qualified! Job done - no problem!
If you look at page 35 of the September 2008 JEC magazine, there is a description of the problem which ends "The fix is a simple replacement of the body itself ......... Some cars just need a reprogram of the ECU. This will be dependent on the VIN Number."
If your local main dealer is proving difficult, suggest you try phoning the next nearest!!!

Graham,
I'm glad that you were able to get it sorted.
Just to clarify the Jaguar Classic Parts website is:
www.jaguarclassicparts.com
However, there may be some viewing issues if you haven't got Java enabled in your browser. I use the site ever day and it seems fine this evening.

Hi Graham - It's not just you or your browser! I hadn't tried further than the home page, but I can't get any further either, using Safari on a Mac.
Via the JDHT website I have located the following e-mail address:
parts@jaguarclassicparts.com. May be worth trying!!
Good luck.

BB,
Do you know what is the official Factory doc which states that this should be done?
It is 303-S514 but the action taken is dictated by your VIN number:
A concern has been identified with the operation of the throttle on a number of 1997-98 MY XK8, 1998 MY XJ8 and 1998-99 MY XJR and VDP SC vehicles. Under exceptional circumstances this concern could cause the engine to cut out, although the engine will continue to be driven by the road wheels through the transmission and drive the ancillaries, so there will be no loss of power steering, brakes, air conditioning, etc. The
engine should restart without difficulty once the vehicle has come to a complete standstill.
Model Year Model VIN Range Repair Required
1997 to 1998 XK 001036 to 020734 Reprogram ECM
1998 V8 XJ (both NA and SC) 812256 to 819771 Reprogram ECM
1998 XK 020735 to 031302 Replace throttle body
1998 V8 XJ NA only 819772 to 853935 Replace throttle body
1998 to 1999 V8 XJ SC only 819772 to 878717 Replace throttle body

Tks.
With an 817 series VIN, that explains why my ECM was re-programmed 5 years ago and why my dealer really doesn't want to replace my throttle body!
