Postby twin » Fri Oct 31, 2008 12:54 pm

i have covered only 85 miles in my 1998 4.0 xj8,
the following problem has occured twice at 70 mph ish on dual carraigeways. the car loses power then comes to a stop, on restarting it throws a lot of white smoke out of exhausts then is fine ??

this is a common problem for the early xj8's,

get your nearest Jaguar dealer on the phone and get them to run your VIN number to see if the throttle body modification has been done

i suspect not, they will book you in and give you a free upgrade to the latest throttle body

it is mentioned else where on this forum, hope this helps

twin....good news,

nice to know that not everything associated with these fine motors costs lots of money doesnt it, lol

Joe,, didnt know yours was an AJ26 engine, must be pre 1999.....?

mines a post 1999 ( 2000 model year ) and i have the electroniic throttle body on the AJ27 engine...so no need for this particular mod to my version of the X308

lol

the main differences from the earlier AJ26 engine to the later ( post 1999 cars to 2002 ) AJ27 engines are

electronic throttle body instead of the vacuum advance device on the side of the TB ,
4 pin spark-plug coil packs in place of 2 pin coil packs,
different engine management system and engine loom,
VVT ( variable valve timing ) in place of none ( 3.2 or 4ltr )
different cam covers and seals ( more of them ),
2nd generation timing tensioners as standard ( still the same problems though ),
different engine covers ( transverse moulded strip rather than a linear moulded stripe with the V8 legend) with some more cut-outs up front

just to name a few

My 7/8/1998 reg 4.0L has VVT. Vin No 851090. Does this mean it is a 1999 Model? Interesting to see the differences between 26 & 27. Yesterday had to be trailered home due to cut out. Fault code 1596 on mechanics code reader, VVT control B. The throttle body has been replaced by Jaguar. After fiddling with various connections including the main ECU, car started! Mystery remains. Got to pluck up courage now to take it for a drive!

well,

it could be anything, when and were does it cut out , at speed ? at idle , at traffic lights etc

the main causes are sensors of some kind,

try the MAF sensor on the air intake tube, also check that tube for any splits at all , as this will imbalance the fuel injection

also the small tubes coming from the top of the cam covers, these are the full load and part load breathers, if these are split or blocked it will also cause running problems ,

you VVT control B is the right bank while sat in the drivers seat , the VVT unit is inside on a '26 engine, and outside on the front of the cam cover on a '27

ensure you have new oil in the engine, as the VVT run on oil pressure, and if the oil is dirty or to thick it will cause problems ,
hope this helps

Hi BB,

The stall happened on approach to a roundabout on slowing down. The code should have read 1396. Oil should not be an issue as the car was serviced 100 miles ago. It would appear the engine is a 27 as the VVT unit is on the outside of the cam cover.

Thanks for your interest.

Kind regards,

Dave

Just as a follow up to my stall problem. It seems that the fuel pump in the tank had failed. All is well at the moment.
