Nikasil Issues

Postby mystery2 » Fri Jul 13, 2007 8:35 am

What's the problem?

Take alook here

If the last 6 characters of your VIN begin with 'F' then you probably, but not certainly, have a post Nikasil engine.

your 17 digit vin should commence with SAJJ (jaguar) or SAJD (daimler), not the sequence you have quoted, check on your V5 or on the car at the left hand base of the windscreen, it is then the last 6 digits that are important, if you have 6 numbers you have a nikasil engine if you have F and five numbers you have a non nikasil engine, hope this helps

sorry speedy , not quite tru,

the F series Vin numbers did have some Nikasil engines fitted, as its the whole cars Vin, not the engines........

the only real way to know is to look at the engine serial number, it will decode down to the time and date of production, this can then be compared to the production run of the nikasil engines

hope this helps

i can tell you that your car will be a Nikasil engined car , as the VIN is one previous to mine, being 876111 , this was one of the later ones with nikasil

providing it passes a good blow-by test ( only at jaguar ) of less than 29 ltrs/min , then the engine will be fine, mine came in at a good reading of 19 ltrs/min , and is as good as it gets for a nine year old car

there is a possibility that your engine may have been changed by Jaguar if it had problems early in its life, a label under the TB will give this info if it has been changed, but bear in mind, they may have put another nikasil engine in,

if its running fine now, you shouldnt get any troubles , that and now no sulphur put into the fuel, and ensure you do a regular oil change, especially if you only do short journeys ( engine not getting to running temperature before you turn it off again )

hope this helps

I have to admit I always thought the 'F' in the VIN coincided with the intro of a steel lined engine, but I'm happy to stand corrected, in your case if your engine is the original to the car, i would suggest you have a Nikasil lined engine, however as BB says the only real check is a physical one on the engine number itself, your engine may well have been changed in the past under warranty, this though should be documented in the cars history

I am also told a quick check is the colour of the sump, silver or black, although i can't remember which is which, sorry, perhaps someone will have this information, although a sump swap to get the correct colour is easy for an unsrupulous seller, so this is not a 100% check

and finally, at a risk of being controversial, Nikasil lined engines are now not the problem they used to be. The fuel that caused the original probem, or rather the additives, have been withdrawn from sale, in 2000/1 I think??. In Scotland we had very few issues, I believe because our fuel came from Grangemouth and contained less sulphur, fact or myth I can't say, but main dealers did very few engine swaps, that is fact.

My understanding of the cars that had problems, were lightly driven cars that were used for shorter journeys, the problem used to manifest itself between 60 and 80K miles. I've had many V8's with nikasil engines way past this mileage, in fact up to 150K without problem

hope this helps, i'm sure others will add better and more definitive info for you

i've never heard of different sump colours before, but wouldnt doubt it for one second from jaguar , lol

speedy is right about the sulpher in the fuel and short journeys, it actually cause a form of sulphuric acid to stay in the bore and eat away the nikasil lining , but that all ended in 2000 ish ,

in fact, if you have a known good nikasil engine its actually stronger than a steel lined engine, as the bore wears less than steel with the correct driving style and maintenance.....

i change my oil every six months , and a new filter every other oil change, i have done 21k miles ( now on 104k ) in 18 months and she sounds as sweet as a nut on the motorway every day for her 70 mile round trip , and its even better now the price of petrol has dropped , lol

coloured sumps

Postby joejag308 » Wed Nov 05, 2008 5:07 am

It used to be a thing with manufacturers either coloured sumps or rocker covers, the old "gold seal" engines were another one sprayed all gold to designate a replacement engine..............sometimes if you caught them at the right time some were really new engines that had been sprayed gold. Saved rebuilding and reconditioning old units. Joe

if a courtesy car is on offer ask for an XKR, I was lucky enough to be in a develpoment XKR convertible the other week, not the current car, but the one that is on it's way, truely amazing, i'm sworn to secrecy on it though, but boy oh boy was it good!!

Fuel, again at the risk of being controversial, use standard unleaded, but avoid cheap supermarket stuff, stick with known brands, I have tried Shell V power both petrol on my Jaguars, and tractor juice in my Vectra, I have to admit i was somewhat dubious, but the Vectra gives at least 10% more MPG on V Power, the Jaguars not so much of an improvement in MPG, but there is a noticeable gain in performance, especially in my XJR, but there is the downside of increased cost per litre

I have compression issues with my 2000 X model with the VIN No F14256, which should make this a steel engine from all of the info so far. But I have contacted jaguar on 08450302303 and they have informed me that it is indeed a nicosil engine fitted to my car.

This contradicts some comments that suggest the letter F stands for ferrous and thus a steel engine. Hope all this helps - my car is still no good however.
