Engine 'chugging'

Postby shovelmark539 » Thu May 11, 2023 7:18 pm

So, just bought myself a very good looking X308 4 litre Sovereign....

It has been running like a dream until my wife went out in it today and on her way home during some stop-start traffic the engine started chugging at tick over ish revs. It pulls and runs well at higher rpm though.

I've popped the bonnet and can't hear anything that you should'nt hear.

I'm thinking maybe a vacuum leak, or breather pipes from the valve covers, or cam chain tensioner problems (eek! ) and no, I don't know if they have been replaced with steel ones yet. The car has done 120,000 miles and has been mostly regularly serviced according to the service records

Am I thinking along the right lines here ?

Thanks, Mark.

Well, that's odd, just had exactly the same symptoms on my little boat.
Without your wife, obviously.
The first expert said it was the fuel filter.
The second expert said I should check the tickover and the engine mounts.

Car things that I have experienced doing that are a blocked fuel pipe and a collapsed catalytic converter.

A bit of an update - went out to the car this morning and started from cold....... Still chugging on tick over but lots of rattle noises and an occasional cracking sound from the front end of the engine . I have had a chat with a very helpful Mugglestones & Co. , my nearest Jaguar specialists and it would seem to be most likely to be the cam chain tensioners.

They are collecting the car on Wednesday, so no starting of the engine until they have had a look - a narrow escape methinks !
