2002 X308 timing tensioner

Hi folks

I guess this is a fairly well worn path... And apologies for another question on this topic..

So a few weeks ago I purchased my first Jag. It's an '02 x308 3.2L which has 116k done. I'm very very happy with it as a Sunday runner, but there are a few jobs I need to so such as breaks & fluid, gearbox oil and filter, some bushes and a bearing. It was all reflected in the price and it's a nice starter project.

There are a few little niggles I have about my approach though. I understand the tensioners are likely the second generation. The engine number (020314) is March 2002.

I do have a small leak on the rocker cover, so its coming off anyhow and it makes sense to upgrade to the third generation ones. My main question is if I need to do the lower tensioners and guides also..?

While the car runs very well, I also show a intake valve control solenoid circit error (P0075) on the code reader .. so that could indicate a vvt issue also...

Any thoughts or pointers to a noob would indeed be most welcome!! :)

The lower tensioner usually survives quite well. It is not stressed like the uppers. The slipper plate often gets a crack in it at high mileage but will soldier on for quite a while. The lower tensioner unit gunges up rather than breaks. Its gradual ratcheting action ceases in line with the mileage done and the regularity of the oil change regime applied.

Hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised when you lift the lids. You are looking for aluminium tensioners. If they are present, you don`t have an issue. Only examination will reveal whether your car has been fitted with the latest generation of tensioners.

Hi UMCD and welcome to the X308 Forum.
As Mike says you wont know until you take the rocker covers off.
If you find they haven't been changed I would be inclined to change the whole lot(top and bottom)including the chains, they do stretch.
I know it's a pain to remove the timing chain cover which is why they don't get done most of the time :( .
That is just my opinion mind you and I am a bit over cautious sometimes but I believe these cars are worth looking after :) .
Thermostat tower is worth checking to see if it has been changed for the aluminium one.
Good luck with the car and hope it gives you a lot of pleasure.
Take Care.
Andy :)

Thank you Mike and Andy...

Im leaning towards doing both top and bottom based on that advice - and i have reached out to a few garages to get a few quotes, im not really looking forward to the replies..!! :D I wouldn't be inclined to do it myself.

with regard to the thermostat tower - for the sake of a £50 part, i have added it to the "to do" list - good advice which i had read somewhere and completely forgot - thank you.!

appreciate the pointers folks!!
