Fault P1229

I have previously posted about my Throttle Body and replaced the part with one from ebay (UK) as its difficult to get refurb in UK.

Yesterday it went into Engine Fail Safe Mode, Stability & Traction , red & orange light but this time I had to wait 15 minutes by the side of the road. When I plugged in the diagnostic it came up with P1229, the engine safe mode could not be cleared by the OBD II. I had to remove the key and it eventually cleared it. This however worries me as I am not addressing the problem and it will happen again.

Also the accelerator revs high when I put it in D, it revs at 10 instead of 6,5-7,5 rpm. When I then put it in N it eventually goes back to normal idle. I have checked the cable and it seems ok but would appreciate any advice, as taking to a garage will only plug in diagnostic and tell me what I already know.

To summarise:-
1 - Fault P1229 - When in Engine Fail Safe Mode ( New one on me as the previous faults P0121)
2 - Knocking sound when I rev the accelerator and release, on the release I hear the sound.
3 - Engine revs high when in D and take time to come back to normal revs.


Any help would be much appreciated as I am planning a long journey next week. PLEASE..........

1229 is to do with the Fuel/Air mixture. So, it could be a stuck butterfly, (dirty) or it could be a MAF sensor needs a good clean with 'Carb'-Cleaner' it could be the large Elec' plug near to the air-cleaner, the wiring there is 'fiddly'. You need to get the problem read by a reliable source.

Joseph -- I've got both on eBay ATM -- my fault was my fuel pump intermittently giving up and a part blocked fuel filter. So I'd bought both MAF:

For the butterfly use Servisol and not WD40 which has an oil in it. Clean all round both sides of the butterfly edges
and with a tooth brush the whole area of chamber. Watch as pressing accelerator does move the butterfly in a smooth way. Check both connectors are firmly in with a squirt of Servisol to each plug / socket. Check all hoses are not frayed underneath their hose clips. These clips need to be tight. Replace with new if in doubt. Did you use a new TB gasket?

The P1229 code on the 97-03 XJ8 relates to:
Throttle motor control circuit malfunction.

But it wouldn't hurt to clean the butterfly anyway.
Also clean the plug connections on the throttle body,there are 2, use contact cleaner and then reconnect.
If still no better it's time to look at the ECM/ECU,either take it to a specialist and have it checked out,
if your savvy with electronics do the pin point tests yourself or get a replacement ECM/ECU and just swap them over(no reprogramming required).It's situated under the plastic cover,the one with the tool kit cut out in.

Check your part No first and try and get one the same if possible.
Not to expensive either,only about half a tank of fuel .

I've answered your emails.

I don't know the condition of the one you bought off eBay

I do know the condition of the one I bought, it came out of a '00MY XJ8 4L with terminal floor rot
Engine started and ran fine and smooth that I saw before the TB was taken out.

I bought the MAF from the same engine. And tested it on mine also

Otherwise I would'nt have bought

Did you use a fresh gasket? (7) (second request)

I also have a good .pdf with pix I can send anyone interested that's for cleaning the TB and MAF and part & full load breather orifices (courtesy Mr Texas Dan via Max Performance Cars website)

Thanks for all your advice and we're still checking over my Throttle Body to see where the faults maybe. Once sorted will get back to you. I can still collect the TB Monday or Tuesday if I do need one.

Engine was running high so I did a full reset by disconnecting the battery etc and she seems to be at the correct idle, however engine still sounds rough. On Monday taking to get exhaust sorted as this could be the reason for rough engine.

I did take it round to my local garage who specialise in Jags and 'sods law' the engine was running fine, which is really annoying. He suggested to take it back when it goes in engine fail mode, easier said than done.

I would just love to know whether it is the TB or something much cheaper and easier to repair or god forbid something much worse, its the fact that its an intermittent problem, which is very strange, to me at least.

Thanks for all your advice. I cleaned both the throttle body and MAF sensor, so hopefully all will be well when I drive down to Wales, only time will tell.

Also exhaust started blowing so took it to garage to check it out and they said the nearside cat. convertor needs replacing, was wondering if this could cause the Engine Fail Safe but no codes come up yet.

I wonder after reading all of this..................Call me daft..............Lambda Sensor fail? Have you had a proper fuel hg reading? I think worth a look.
