I`ve bought this great classic thread to the top again. Brake Buster created a "master" thread here.
For those wishing to undertake top tensioner removal on a 4 litre car, and replace with ali units, this thread is unbeatable. Later 4.2 cars already have the new type tensioners fitted so replacement on the 4.2, is not required.
For those wishing to go further i.e changing the primary tensioners and guides or remove cylinder heads, this link to a Youtube video itemises what is involved. Breaking down one of these engines is one heck of a job with much effort time and expense being needed. This includes the need to acquire the cam lock tools and the front pulley extractor. This is what is required to go as far as removing cylinder heads.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsYmRl7meFE
This 4 litre XK engine was in perilous condition when opened up. Both tensioners about to give up and the primary guides were also in quite a state. Then the fellow doing the job, lifted the heads. Quite a job.

Congrats on a job well done
When I was still able did a top end job on a Rover V8 -- followers, rods, cams, etc. Not being a mechanic myself got a real sense of achievement!
Erm, when will you be taking my 4L in?
