Knock sensor 2

Postby markjuby » Sat Dec 14, 2013 10:52 am

Back seeking help with my 2002 XJ8 3.2L Executive please.

The dreaded check engine light has come back. The Autel code reader reveals P0332 which is apparently Knock Sensor 2, circuit low bank 2.

When it first happened "restricted performance" was displayed, although there appeared to be no impact on the way the car drove. After standing overnight and starting her up this morning, she runs fine and the "restricted performance" message has gone, but the amber check engine light is still illuminated.

It may be worth mentioning that a "Check rear lights" message has been displaying from time to time when I apply the brakes. The lights are all working fine.

Any thoughts?

Well from the lack of replies, it would seem that you all realised that it was probably just due to the battery running low. It finally occurred to me that the car had been used less than normal, and with the cold wet weather all the gadgets on the car we being used to the full.

Anyway the good news is that after two new tyres and replacing the headlight bulb, she sailed through the MOT and has now been serviced. The pesky warning messages have gone and I'm looking forward to another 12 months of great driving.

Mark temperamental to say the least these 308s.but great when running ok ....im glad you finally sorted the car, the battery issue was one of the first things I would have mentioned, the other while we are on the subject is check the boot locking with the key and some WD 40 just in case the battery goes wrong and you need to access the boot area.........its the simple things that cause most problems as these cars get around the 15 year old mark........Joe

Thanks Joe. I have lubricated the boot lock as you suggest.

The check rear light message is showing up again from time to time, and it is possible that the Varta battery I fitted may not be up to it. Do you have a recommendation for a replacement battery?

Cheers

More likely just a poor connection at the back of a light cluster or bad earth. Clean up, refit and see what happens then.

First indications of a deficient battery will be slow cranking on start up or a non start if voltage is less than 12v. It does not sound as if you have a battery problem at the moment.

See this post for general info about batteries and general maintenance and performance.

Finally solved my "Check rear lights" message. The offside brake/side light bulb failed this week. After I replaced it, the message has gone. The bulb must have been failing for some time.

Oddly, I quite miss the message coming on from time to time. No doubt something else will replace in due course!
