Performance upgrades - impact on insurance premiums

Chaps,

In case it helps anyone thinking of upgrading their car (I'm not - well certainly not yet - but was intrigued about whether the insurance premiums would take a massive hit).

So I called my insurance company today and they were really helpful. I asked about both an uprated supercharger pulley and an ECU remap. In each case, the key question asked was whether the increase in BHP would be 0-10%, 10-20% or 20%+. I answered 0-10% for each of these on the basis that I think a pulley might add 25-30bhp and a typical ECU remap the same again. Versus the standard 370bhp of the XJR, each is well under 10%.

I was told if I did both, my premiums would increase by around £10 per month = £120 per year. Excess would increase to £500 comulsory and £250 voluntary = £750.

I currently pay around £370 per year so this would increase to £490.

I thought this might be helpful to anyone considering doing either or both of these mods.

Nigel
