Engine Stops

Postby springelec » Tue Oct 13, 2009 10:46 am

Hi Joejag,

I believe my fix would interest members who have experienced sudden engine death with TRAC FAILURE & ASC FAILURE displayed on the dash board.

I'm not claiming this is THE fix for this problem, just that it was the fix for my car. A friend of mine had the same error messages on her XK8 which were caused by wheel sensor connectors. She had them all replaced and the problem went away.

I posted an earlier note asking for help from yourself and/or BrakeBuster to up load my pdf as I don't know if or how documents can be added to bulletin board.

If adding documents to the bulletin board isn't possible, I'm more than happy to send copies of the pdf to individual members.

Cheers

After having had two fuse boxes replaced the problem still re-occured. Have now had damaged ECU sensor pins repaired and had right hand rear sensor replaced and link loome replaced. Will have to wait and see if this has finally solved the problem. I did take a copy of springelecs pdf's to the garage which hopefully pointed them in the right direction.
The car should be renamed XJMoneypit.

It did pass it's MOT thanks be to God, whoever she is.

PDF upload

"springelec"
I have referred your enquiry about uploading PDFs to our webmaster who knows about such things.
He advises it can be done and he is looking into exactly how.
Watch this space.

Car still playing up. It's back in the garage this morning. I have now lost all faith in the car and am no longer willing to put myself or family into potentially dangerous situations with the engine cutting out.
Once I get it back I will be looking to trade it in for something a bit more reliable.

Springelec,

Similar problem on my Sovereign. Stability Control & Traction Control warning on all the time + ABS light + speedo fluttering between 0 & 5 mph (even with engine off) and doesn't go any higher (although trip distance is recording fine). Also Cruise Control not working (light not illuminated on switch)

I'm guessing it's probably ABS sensors / looms / ABS ecu connections in some way. Obviously it won't pass it's MOT next week like this! And to make matters worse, the OBDII diagnostic plug has two bare wires where it's chafed over the metal bracket, so the diags can't be read and reset. Still a battery disconnect should clear down the memory.

If you could kindly email me your pdf document, I'm sure it will help my diagnosis. email is paul@jec-xjs-forum.org.uk

Got car back from garage who said they cleaned throttle body. Problem happened again today. Had to call AA who found two codes P1121 Throttle pedal Pos sensor High and also P1122 Throttle pedal pos sensor low. Recommended removing throttle pedal and unplugging it to clean connections which I will try to do myself. Am still going to trade it in. Looked at Honda Insight this morning. Quite impressed.

I got my SuperV8 back on Thursday last from diagnostics check at main dealer. Fault code P1121 pedal demand sensor also identified. No advice to remove, unplug and clean however. Report states throttle pedal Track A and Track B both working together. That fault has been cleared. I have not been able to reproduce fault since. (I have had supercharger seals replaced; throttle body cleaned, and connections checked to confirm gold and not tin).

Like Paul I am concerned my next failure will happen at a motorway split when there's no hard-shoulder to escape to!

I had hoped to get to theX308 Seminar on the 28th when maybe this problem may be aired. (Unfortunately I have to go to Jersey for a rugby meeting!)

Seminar

Postby joejag308 » Wed Nov 11, 2009 8:07 am

Jed, why dont you contact Nigel Thorley with your proxy type question for the seminar.........im sure the item would be raised.
Have you contacted Dave Marks or any of the relevant experts with the problem?
If there are concerns such as yours re the worry of failures on the road after evident solved problems........it does need reassurance.

Dave Marks reply

Postby joejag308 » Thu Nov 26, 2009 9:34 pm

Gents, Dave has replied to your comments re the problem you seem to be having........Jed i have replied to your request re the post that did or didnt go missing...........here is Daves reply to the problem......Joe

Hello Joe,

This is often a result of air flow meter problems, remove and clean the AFM, particularly if they are AJ27 engines as opposed to the earlier AJ26 units.

The AJ26 cars have a throttle body with a black vacuum capsule attached, the later AJ27 cars do not.

It could also be an ABS/TCM failure but without a scan, there is not much more to say.

Hope this helps

Mail back if required

Regards

David Marks

The 308 seminar is open shortly at Castle Bomwich......David Ireland will be there representing the forum..........anyone going there please join in the debates and bring any productive issues back to the forum please...Joe

My thanks to all - I have given a proxy question for David Ireland to ask tomorrow at the seminar. I am also booked in for an autologic test next week. So far I have counted around ten possible causes for the ASC/TRAC failure messages!

Just to update everyone. I have now disposed of the vehicle as even if the cutting out problem had been fixed I wouldn't have had any trust in it. I have gone from the sublime to the ridiculous and have bought a Honda Insight, so have gone from a 3.2 engine to a 1.3 with hybrid back up. £15 a year road tax, half the cost of insurance, 50 to 60 to the gallon and £500 for 5 years servicing. I know, it's not a Jag. but now retired I could no longer afford the upkeep of a big cat. Parting was a wrench but my mid-life crisis is now over.

That's a shame - I have decided to continue to prolong my mid-life crisis (which is now well past the mid-life stage) and soldier on.

Since my last post I have had two autologic checks.

The first, of course, revealed nothing as the memory had been cleared at the main dealer a month before. After booking this check I suddenly had the offside stop lamp permanently on even with ignition off and something blowing number 3 fuse in the larger for'd fuse box (heater, windscreen heater etc). Traced to a u/s alarm sounder unit (weather prone up front) and a problem with the security and locking module (in the boot).

After temporary fixes and another ASC/Trac failure - this time accompanied by engine stalling (a first for me) the second autologic test came up with fault code P0420 Catalytic conveertor bank one. Decision made to leave until the next fail safe episode before considering replacement.

However I have had fitted a second hand security/locking module, a new alarm sounder (and a replacement rear light 'cos I had a car park liaison) cost of parts £399 plus VAT!

Last event had ABS warning light on; ASC/Trac failure messages but no fail safe mode. Will be returning for a third autologic teast after the next one!!

Keep smiling :D

Hi Folks,

Guess what. The dreaded ASC/TRAC failure came back.

But having had that 'Deja Vu' feeling, I immediately jumped on the fault report I published about this time last year about how to fix it.

I disconnected the suspected connector, flashed both sides with a liberal amount of deflux spray and put it all back together again. Took about 15mins in all.

Well, the XJR has been fine since the 'repair', so I'm convinced that connector is definitely the culprit for my ASC/TRAC failure problems.

The deflux spray I used is available from Rapid Electronics, part number 87-1164. It's brilliant stuff for removing grime of all sorts that can corrupt electrical connectors even though its primary purpose is to remove excess solder flux.

Cheers
