Looking for X308 DIYer in North West England

Postby chuffer » Thu Sep 16, 2010 2:50 pm

Hi all,

I have an E Type so a member of the JEC for a little while, but am now thinking of buying an X308, possibly a Sovereign circa year 2000.

The only way I can keep any of my cars on the road is to do as much of the work as possible on them myself so I am keen to meet any X308 owners in the North West of England in order to perhaps meet at JEC meetings for a chat or to meet ad hoc so I can pick some brains!

Any assistance gratefully appreciated, especially if it helps me locate and choose a good one to buy. I'm not quite a novice on this front, but have only read about (ie not had hands-on) nikasil, timing chain tensioners, water pump impellors, throttle body issues and niggling codes being thrown up spuriously etc. In fact I have been warned off the X308 as a DIY vehicle by two prominent JEC members but I must be a glutton for punishment!

thanks in advance
Ray

Hi Ray
I recently purchased a Jag XJ8 (X308) as a non-runner for £450, needed a new engine.... long story....short version.
Replaced engine with a 80k mileage engine, got help from my mechanic. only took 2 days from taking old engine out to put new engine in. He did most of installation, I just stood back and 'assisted' when required. (i.e. brewed up now & again). She now runs (& feels) like a renuvenated old girl.
If you need any advise or help on XJ8's or XJ6's (1995-19998), I'll try and point you in the right direction.
Regards
Tony
