welcome Dragonfly
i may be wrong here, but didnt all ' sport ' XJ8's come with painted grilles,
the only reason for a chrome one would be specially ordered, or fitted by a PO for cosmetic reasons
being a Sovereign mine has fluted chrome ones, but i also have a spare set of painted ( graphite grey ) ones that are brand new that i got cheap, i was toying with the idea of painting them Seafrost to match my car, but i'm not so sure

I think you may be right in stating that the Sport came with a painted grill. The slats are black.
