Another new toy - XJR-100 : Details required please

Postby steve00932 » Tue Aug 09, 2016 10:55 am

Hi, Having only last week rejoined the JEC having purchased a 1998 XJR, I now have gone completely overboard and purchased an XJR-100 (subject to viewing).

I would be very grateful if anyone could give me any information about this vehicle (currently on H8BBY but being transferred back to GF51WXY) VIN Number F46783.

My understanding is that there are only approx 72 of these right hand vehicles left in the country, is this correct?

Thanks in advance, and also looking forward to my first club meeting (South Kent Region) tonight at the Collingbrook Hotel in Ashford, Kent.

Steve,

Congrats on the purchase of the car! Lovely vehicles! I'm not sure of how many UK cars there are; I had read somewhere that originally 89 UK cars were sold? Rob Jenner may know more precise details

It would be helpful if you could update your membership record with the vehicle details when you get a chance. You can do that by going to the "My Account" page in the "MemberZone" and scrolling to the bottom. Click here to go straight to that page:

Enjoy the car!

Thanks Paul.
I went to the Kent South meet last night and got some great advice about purchasing the XJR-100 and have decided to get the AA to give it a once over before I commit to the 300 mile round trip to purchase her.

If all goes well she should be home by early next week. If that happens I wil have the full VIN and will be able to update the car register.

Steve,

If the car is 300 miles away from Kent, it might be near Rob Jenner. Perhaps worth giving Rob a call?

Good luck

Hi Steve,
I had an XK8 inspected by the RAC. They did an excellent job. My only advice is that you read the report very carefully and take further advice on anything reported just so you know what the cost implications are. Don't let buyers blindness kick in!

Thanks for the feedback all.
I had the car inspected by National Vehicle Inspections.
It came back with quite a few problems, so I am negotiating with the Buyer at the moment.
Seems like it will be quite a big project to get the car looking clean and driving well but this is something that I can do over the next few months / years.
Most problems were bodywork / Rust / interior related as the Engine and Gearbox tests came back ok.

Will keep you posted when I have a resolution either by purchasing the car or getting my refundable deposit back!

The Chassis Number is : SAJAC15N52MF46783

Does anyone know the current owner - Matthey Hobby ?
He tells me he has been a JEC member for over 15 years.
Seems very genuine...
Car is located in Poole, near Bournemouth

So - update.... We cannot agree on a price for the car as I believe there is too much work to be done.
Sadly I am now NOT the owner of an XJR-100. The search continues...
Fingers crossed he does sell it so he can refund my deposit as he has spent it !!!!!

Looking over the mot history on the web for the last 10 years it seems you might have had a lucky escape from that one!
It's been over halfway to the moon too. There must be a better one for you, speak to Rob J

Having had it inspected I am pleased not to have purchased it, however, I am now having to take the guy to court as he will not give me my £500 deposit back and will now not answer my calls, texts or emails.

I have open court proceedings against him to recover my deposit.
Lesson learned - dont pay deposits by Bank transfer as Ebay or the banks will not work on your behalf to recover costs.

I now have to wait 24 days for Matthew Hobby to reply to the court letter sent to him before I
can take any further action.

Such a sad situation, but I will recover my monies !!!

I am sorry to hear of the would-be vendor's actions in withholding a deposit and not communicating to resolve the issue.

Buying cars is generally very exciting, whereas selling them is typically not. Issues like this do cause such pain for all concerned, when we hope and assume that all enthusiasts (ie car club members) are reasonable people, but may not always be the case.

Best of luck in resolving this swiftly.

With luck, I would have though this will probably be resolved by a refund shortly before the Court case. With a judgement likely to be found in your favour, costs would also be applied. It would be an unwise man if he were to contest your claim.

Having said that, a plea of not being able to pay you in full immediately due to personal circumstances might result in low monthly payments for the next couple of decades or even death..... I`ve seen it where a couple of payments are made, then stop. Then it is up to you to take the defaulter back to Court again.

Go to Trovit on the internet for a consistent source of good cars. Register, then watch your email for several mails a day showing you the latest cars on the market. The site appears to harvest from the other normal sales sites and lumps it all together for easy viewing. It is a great access portal in my opinion.

Oh, I'm really sorry to hear about your predicament but as you say, you will, one way or another get your money back. There are unfortunately many similar stories with buying and selling - and not just with vehicles. Many years ago I sold a cherished number to a dealer who sold it on and pocketed the whole lot. I got my money eventually through the small claims court including costs.
The up side of all this is that we have just bought an unbelievably well cared for Honda CR-V with one lady owner and EVERYTHING it left the factory with is still present, keys, books DVD, remote and headsets, the lot. Ok, the fuel, oil and tyres have been changed. When I travelled the 500 miles to collect it, they picked me up at the railway station and there was a package in the boot, not to be opened until I got home containing many presents of new hats, gloves and other paraphernalia for my wife and I - they had no need to do that.

Keep looking, there are still lots of really decent people out there to buy from.

All the best in your quest,
Ian
