Hi, sold my XJS Celebration and bought Daimler Super V8

Postby Graham » Mon May 11, 2009 12:28 am

Hi everyone,i am not a new member but i have just bought a 1999 Daimler Super V8 with 15000 miles only on the clock backed up with service history and mot's.
A truly great car,how ever i have read before i bought it about the engine and tensioner problems. But with this low milage it was too good to pass up.I will now start investigating on how to try and limit the problem areas.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.I attended the Jec Rallies in my xjs and i am looking forward to doing the same in my new "bus".
I hope to see you all soon.Graham

GRAHAM your new steed sounds extra special......check the history is stamped up fully......the mileage may be low but the time span requires a service as per book to get the correct stamps in it......10 years and 15000 miles i thought i was doing well 10 years and 40000......Joe

Graham,

Hi, Congrats on the purchase of the Daimler; it sounds a fantastic car - my ideal X308! Tell us a bit more about the car, SWB or LWB, Bench Seat or extended centre console, what colour? Any pics yet? Are we allowed to know what sort of money you paid or is that too painful?!

Shame that you had to sell the XJS, especially as yours was one of the last 400 made. I took an alternative route, kept the XJS and bought a cheap XJ8. Mind you, I'm wondering if there is any such thing as a cheap XJ8 - perhaps you either pay a lot for the car initially or pay a lot subsequently!

Have you checked with a dealer for any outstanding service actions? On early cars there are a large number of Service Bulletins (as opposed to safety recalls where they contact you). These include S514 (Throttle Body replacement / ECM re-flash), S474 (Part-load breather cleaning), R466 (Throttle Cable clip replacement) , R714B (Don't know what this is but it's been done on my car!)

Anyway, enjoy the car. I spent yesterday afternoon doing an oil and filter change. 7k miles since the last one and I was surprised how clean was the old oil. Then spent an hour stripping the aerial and trying to get it to work properly (Thanks for the tips BB!!).

Joe i will contact you at Thoresby and thanks for the info.

Paul, my xjs was superb and i was vey sad at letting it go but i had to bite the bullet it was a stunning car.
The Daimler i have driven for about 100 miles and well its just so good. You mention the price i paid well it wasn't a fortune,it was a bereavement sale and they just wanted it to go to a good home and be looked after and enjoyed.I suppose for me i was in the right place at the right time.
The car has only done 400 miles this last year and next month its due for its service again and i will follow up on the service bulletins as you kindly mentioned. It is a LWB,metallic blue, cream interior unmarked and as yet i havn't tried out all the gadgets,in fact i am not sure where they all are!It has the extended console.
I will get some pics sorted and if anyone is going on the Manchester to Blackpool run i will be there. Thanks again Graham
Update contacted local Jag dealer Sturgess Leicester and they will be fitting the new throttle body on Wednesday. Thanks Paul.

wow
a stunning car,
it doesnt really matter what you paid as it is special in its own right...
i bought my 98 xj8 a year ago with 26000 on the clock-got 36000 now!-and i thought that was the limit for low milage 8)

that said, i couldnt look at S689 UEG and got LNZ 7902 off ebay for £50 to finish her off :D
