Hello
I'm looking for a code fault reader and there are hundreds available from the very cheap to the expensive professional models. I don't want to spend a fortune as it will stay on the shelf for most of it's life. Can anyone recommend a model suitable for my 1997 XK8, which will also fit my modern BMW?

If you enter 'code reader' into the search box, you will find lots of comments about different readers suitable for Jaguars. BMWs are another story! Mike.

I've been happy with my iCarsoft i930 as it does my Range Rover too.If you enter 'code reader' into the search box, you will find lots of comments about different readers suitable for Jaguars. BMWs are another story! Mike.
"Modern" BMW? Oxymoron shurely?
AFAIK BMWs use their own version of OBDii code that only has a passing resemblance to the basic universal "p" error codes' listings that were originally published in the 90s. So its either a basic "p" code reader that will do for both (that displays via a program on your lap or palmtop) Or two designated readers that'll do the job properly for both cars -- neither will match dealer diagnostics though. I have an early 96 Xk8 , however it has a 97 dated picking slip in it. However it is registered 96.
I was going to but a icarsoft I 930 and contacted a retailer to confirm it would be suitable. After a lot of chasing around the answer was no, it would not be suitable.
2 years down the line (about 3 weeks ago ) and still with no fault code reader, I emailed numerous suppliers who either emailed the link to the specs or didn't bother replying.
I have even sent an email to icarsoft Europe and USA asking the same question but also asking if the i930 wouldn't, do they have anything in their products which does.
To date I have received no reply.
However from what I can gather it is one of the more popular readers but I have no practical experience, as I cannot get a reply from the company
