It is incredibly easy to accidentally bend the contacts in the remotes when fitting new batteries. So, check them very carefully. If the remotes have never worked, it's possible both could be faulty or even that someone has bought cheap remotes intended for the US and other markets. The latter operate on different frequencies (perhaps a UK XK8 owner could remind us by posting the detailed numbers/frequency stamped on an operational XK8 remote?). Once the remotes have checked out, the best thing to do would be to book a diagnostics session with a good Jaguar specialist possessing either Jaguar diagnostics or the Autologic equivalents to determine if the problem is a faulty receiver or within a module. Thanks mike.I have had both remotes checked and are ok.they are genuine jaguar remotes.I still don't get a beep or red light on the gear selector so I am thinking the problem is the control unit.

Mmm! Not sure how your remotes were checked and proved OK, but the fobs of your XK8's era do suffer from a build up of carbon dust from the internal switch contacts (Later fobs have proper switches rather than contact pads). The contact pads can be cleaned up with isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds. Just something else to try before committing significant cash!!

Ray,

I'm interested to hear if you found a solution to your remote problem. I had exactly the same issue and it turned out the be water in the Security and Locking module which is located beneath the fuse box in the boot, behind the battery. The central locking and alarm all worked with the key, but not the remote. When I opened up the S&L module, there was a water stain in one corner of the case and the components on the pcb in that area were all corroded, so I assume that is the remote interface section. Sourced a replacement module on ebay for £50 and it all worked at the first attempt. You have to make sure the replacement module has the same serial number and they are different for coupes and convertibles, you can't interchange them, they need to match. The keyfobs are a bit of a problem, with no lights to tell if they are working or not. The rubber pads seem to lose their electrical connectivity after a while, so sometimes cleaning is not enough. I used a TV remote control conductive paint which works well, but sometimes flakes of paint get stuck in the electrical contact basically jamming the button on and flattening the batteries. We need a supplier of new rubber section for these fobs, but so far there's nothing available, let me know if you know otherwise.

Hope this helps

Graeme
