Back in an XK8 at last but one issue

Postby davidt34 » Wed Sep 19, 2018 9:27 am

Hi Guys
I have a real passion for Jags and the XK8 in particular. I had to sell my beloved 1998 XK8 about four years ago and have been driving a 1997 XJ6 in the past year. I finally took the plunge and bought a lovely 2002 XK8 4.2 but there is one issue (known when I bought it) that I could use some advice with.
The key fob is dead and the car won't go into program mode via the headlight flashing routine.
I use the key to lock and unlock the car BUT there is an odd clinking / buzzing sound from the glovebox like a relay trying to complete.
I understand the security module may be at fault but I thought that was in the boot - any ideas what could be causing the noise from the glovebox and could it be related to the key fob issue?. It sometimes carries on for a few seconds after the engine is off.
Thanks in advance
Dave
PS I go the the Bicester Scramble and was there on the JEC stand at the one before last with my XJ6 and will be there in October too so hopefully see some of you there.

Hi All

I spent a couple of hours trying to find out what was happening and I have now managed to get the car into program mode (I had to have the door open for some reason) but the keyfob still doesn't work so I will try getting another fob online.
The odd noise from the glovebox turns out to be the aircon - when I turn off the aircon the noise stops. The aircon still blows nice and cold so is working but the noise is quite off putting so for now the aircon will stay off.

Any ideas what that noise could be?.

Best regards

Dave

Is the noise there all the time? If so I am guessing one of the fans, I think there are 2, but other wiser folk will know.

Hi Dave,
Congratulations on getting back to the XK8,a great looking car in my humble opinion and one of the best rear ends,

Anyway back to your little problem,Andy is correct there are two blower fans one each side under the dash.
Could just be some debris in the blower compartment, try putting on full and leaving for 15 to 30 seconds to see if it makes a difference or if anything comes out of the vents.Sometimes leaves or the foam insulation can get trapped in there.
Here's what your looking for:

Detailed info on removal can be found in the XK8 Workshop Manual,if you don't have one P.M. me your email and I'll gladly send you one in PDF.
Hope this helps,

Hi Guys

Thank you both for your really helpful replies. Funnily enough I drove down to Brighton last night from Milton Keynes and the noise appears to have gone!. I have driven her with the Aircon off for a couple of days and had the blowers going so maybe it did clear itself.
My last XK8 was my first real love affair with a car (a 1997 4.0) but this one is just so stunning to drive and feels much tighter somehow and smoother. It's 2002 4.2 with 114,000 and full history so I think it has maybe had an easier life than my previous one.
Anyway great to be back in an XK again and hope to see you at an event sometime.
Best regards
Dave
