roof lining

I checked my roof lining about two months ago and was pleased to see all was neat and tidy, however now after the extreme heat we have experienced several places are sagging, (just behind the light cluster and above the roof pillars). Now looks quite untidy
From a previous thread this looks to be a serious problem to remedy, does anybody know of a good auto upholsterer in the SW (Cornwall), or has anybody discovered a cunning plan to remedy the situation. (I've never known this to happen on much cheaper cars )

My XK's roof lining sags by the Rear Screen (top centre) & has for most of the time I've owned it (8+ years)

I suspect it's been taken out & not replaced properly.

I also was told to leave well alone as you can do more harm than good.

I've, reluctantly, learned to live with it (don't look too close etc.)!

Hi Painter....had the same problem with my 1998.. xk8...sagging in 2-3 places...had to go too upholstery shop...had to take out headboard and reglue If I remember ..about £200 to do job....all fixed now....but sorry, shop near Liverpool...Tom.

Hi all, Hope you don't mind me hijacking this thread but I didn't want to create another one for a minor query on the headlining.

My cars headlining is loose at the back, at the middle of the rear screen.
I would like to fix it myself but need to know how these linings either come off (heap of trouble?) or how it should be fixed at the back.
Is it practical to "glue" it in some way?

still waiting for a good solution on this. I think it is possible to glue back but will it go back without wrinkles etc.. Thought I had found some ideas on u tube but no, the results were depressing. I have a notion to use a hypodermic needle to get glue onto the base without leaving a visible hole, but I don't possess one, yet.

Just seen new fibreglass / flock covered ? versions on the net, about £140 delivered... but then how are they fitted?

Not a bad idea re the injection of glue but again does the lining touch the roof panel somewhere that would make a difference?

need to find out how these were originally assembled and what (and where) they attach to... or is it just the rigidity of the panel that is supposed to hold it in?

I have the same problem and have been told it is caused by the headlining board going crumbly causing the glue to come adrift. Like you I considered a day fix by spraying adhesive into the saggy bits but was told in no uncertain terms that this would be a very bad idea as the glue would
bleed through. Those nice guys at Spraytech have recommended a place in Ivybridge that they use. If you send a private message I will give you the contact details

Just been reading about replacement headliners and apparently Jaguar installed velcro above the rear, centre of the headlining
Is this what has let go, if so, then it must be a case of pressing back into place but mine wont hold...
Can't be that simple, surely.......

The headliner is held in by body tabs. Removing it from the car is a major task involving removal of all the seats, centre console and other interior trim panels. If you can solve the problem in situ, it will save a lot of work! Mike.

Hi PTR,
If the rear centre section is held up by Velcro, then presumably the Velcro itself is glued to the cant rail metalwork above the rear screen. After all of these years it's odds on that the adhesive has failed, not the Velcro . Sitting in the rear seat, can you see above the headlining and be able to remove the Velcro? If so, then I have some 2" wide self adhesive Velcro which has incredibly strong adhesive. You'll probably only need a 6" long strip - PM me and I'll send you some.

Just visited an upholsterer in Penzance who has been doing these roof linings for many years, and nearly all of them Jaguar. They have used the same materials apparently for many years (and many models) As Mike has suggested it will involve the removal of seats/console/side trim and rear window. (what a b***dy mess Jaguar ) I think I will have it done as it is just above my eyes, but the board/material are no longer available from Jaguar so will have to be the nearest equivalent colour. I must say whilst on the renovation trail that the parts dept. at Carr's Jaguar in Truro have been extremely helpful even when they can't supply the goods, giving useful contacts/resources to follow up.

Had sagging centre section of rear roof on my XKR. Fixed it with glue and a lot of patience and discomfort as you have to hold it in place until set. Still in place 12 months on so must have done a reasonable job.

Have found that Dave Roche (Jag Parts) sell a head lining fully prepared to replace the old one. The new ones are fibreglass with bonded fabric so little chance of this happening again. Apparently the colour won't be a perfect match due to fading of the original upholstery but sounds the best option. Seats need to be removed but not the rear screen. I'll try gluing the original first as nothing to lose now, but if I make a mess at least there is light at the end of the headlining.

the new headlining is in + front pillars, great job by Spraytech - unfortunately no photos as I left them a camera with a flat battery Real shame as it would have been good to see what holds everything in place. I will post a couple of shots of the final job but total cost for anybody considering this came to £300 +. No windows to remove but the n/s door and seat came out. (Centre console stays in). At least I can see where I am going now, and have kept the old lining - just in case

well here's the new lining in place. Think I may have opted for the wrong colour when compared to the sun visor but only grey or fawn to choose from. Not a startling photo without comparison with the old lining which covered my head but many of you out there will know how that looks!
